Vioxx Alternatives
Since Merck's recall of the COX-2 inhibitor Vioxx, I have had a bevy of inquiries from those wishing to go off it, as well as Celebrex
and Bextra.
I thought I would share my comments with you.
As much as I hate to say I told you so, I did not approve of COX-2 inhibitors even before they came on the market in 1998. I am sure many of
you who have come to see me got an earful regarding COX-2 Inhibitors. My strong opposition came from shoddy research, pre-warnings
about side-effects before the drug was released, and complaints from clients who had experienced side-effects after taking them.
It is understandable why many of you take COX-2 inhibitors. They work for pain. Unfortunately, at a price too high for many to warrant taking
them.
Now, the question is, what to do for the pain?
I will not expound on drug alternatives, because I believe that is the last resort if you have exhausted every effort into changing diet and
nutrients, minimizing stress levels, and enhancing lifestyle.
1) Diet is 75% of the battle. When dealing with chronic pain, 100% vigilance with your diet is crucial. Refocus on the foods that are right
for you. Eliminate carbohydrate overload. Carbs contribute to inflammation, which cause pain.
2) Stress is inflammatory! Managing stress is of the utmost importance in managing pain.
3) Lifestyle change is extremely important for pain reduction. Your living situation, work environment, family life, exercise regimen, and
utilization of massage, chiropractic, yoga, acupuncture, etc. are all interconnected with pain.
4) Nutrients can play a role in pain management. Specifically targeted nutrients such as magnesium, high dose omega-3 fish oil, glucosamine/chondroitin,
and nutraceuticals such
as Metagenics' new product Kaprex, are
being successfully utilized in my practice.
I look at the Vioxx recall as a blessing in disguise for many of you. It may allow those who have strayed from good habits to refocus their
energy on non-drug options for pain management.
