Are You a Locavore?

 The New Oxford Dictionary Word of the Year for 2007 was (drum-roll please) locavore. The past year saw the
popularization of a trend in using locally grown ingredients, taking advantage of seasonally available foodstuffs that can be bought and prepared
without the need for extra preservatives. The "locavore" movement encourages consumers to buy from farmers' markets or even to grow or pick
their own food, arguing that fresh, local products are more nutritious and taste better. Locavores also shun supermarket offerings as an
environmentally friendly measure, since shipping food over long distances often requires more fuel for transportation.
The word 'locavore' shows how food-lovers can enjoy what they eat while still appreciating the impact they have on the environment. It's significant in that it brings together eating and ecology in a new way. |

 -Join us in opposing a petition filed with the FDA to allow the use of irradiation for the control of microbial contamination
on dietary supplements and dietary ingredients. If this petition happens to be approved, rest assured that Nutritional Concepts will not dispense any
dietary supplement that was irradiated. Voice your opinion after reading the following at Citizens
for Health.-The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has decided to relax its stance on food labeling to allow some foods which have been irradiated to be labeled as "pasteurized" instead. The proposed rule changes would allow companies to label food as pasteurized when the treatment of irradiation doesn't cause any material change in the product or any material change in the consequences that may arise from ingesting the product. If approved, this would be a disastrous development. - Children who consume high levels of dairy products may have a greater risk of developing colorectal cancer in adulthood, a study spanning 60 years suggests. -New evidence shows that the drug makers Merck and Schering-Plough have conducted several studies of their popular cholesterol medicine Zetia that raise questions about its risks to the liver, but the companies have never published those results. -The Senate late in December dropped an amendment to the farm bill that would have banned fatty foods and high-calorie beverages at school snack bars, stores and vending machines. The Amendment would have been the first legislation to update the school nutrition standards since 1979, a period in which scientific opinion on what foods are appropriate has drastically shifted. |
