Avocados are true superfoods. They are wonderful sources of dietary fiber, vitamin C, potassium, vitamin E, and lutein. The belief that avocados are fattening is a misnomer. The fat contained in avocado is monounsaturated, the same as olive oil.

Heartburn/GERD/Acid Reflux can occur because of too little stomach acid. How is this possible?

When stomach acid level is low, it is no longer a sterile environment. As we discussed with H.pylori, bacteria populates the area vacated by stomach acid and proliferates in the small intestine and colon. The bacteria putrefies food in the stomach, which produce volatile gases. The pressure from the gas shoots the remaining stomach acid into the esophagus.

Your physician should rule out Hypochlorhydria before considering acid blocking/neutralizing medication. They can make the situation worse if you have this condition.

For those diagnosed with Hypochlorhydria, betaine hydrochloric acid is usually recommended. You must be screened by a licensed health professional to find the proper dose. If taken improperly, betaine HCL can cause heartburn and ulcers.
