Is My Food Safe?
--------------------
We have gotten this question a lot lately. It is very complex and has no simple answer.Tainted spinach, peanut butter, ground beef, pet food, farm-raised seafood, Veggie Booty, food booth at the Taste of Chicago, and this month (drum roll please)...chili sauce/canned meat products. Irradiation, viral adulteration, packing fresh meat in carbon monoxide, administering growth hormones and antibiotics, cloned animals, GMO's, accumulation of heavy metals and pesticides in our nutrient-poor food. Did we forget bird flu, mad cow, norovirus, e. coli, salmonella and clostridium botulinum? These are some of the issues we have become familiar with over the last year in relation to our food supply. The public's confidence in food safety is at an all time low, with good reason. In our opinion, the safety of food has serious flaws that require a global effort to rectify. Unsafe food is almost unavoidable. However, there are some things you can do to minimize your exposure. |

School is Fast Approaching.

While lamenting the fact that kids will be back in school VERY soon, with fall right around the corner, it is a good time to
get their diets and lifestyles in order, as well as your own.
These wonderful resources can help you accomplish this: |

West Nile Epidemic?
--------------------
According to the Centers for Disease Control, cases of the West Nile virus, transmitted by mosquitoes, are four times higher
than what was reported last year. The virus causes a mild, flu-like illness in 20 percent of those infected, and no symptoms in about 80 percent. In
about 1 percent of cases, the illness progresses to a brain infection that can be fatal, predominately in the elderly. Last year, 4,269 cases were
reported in the United States, including 1,495 brain infections, and 177 people died.
Please note that mosquito season goes well into September.

-Did you know that ostrich is high in omega-3 fatty acids, provides half of your daily iron intake, and boasts 36 grams of lean
protein per 6 oz. portion?-We hear so much about probiotics, but hardly anything about PREbiotics: the food for your probiotic flora. Without prebiotics, probiotics are less effective and do not survive in the gastrointestinal tract for very long. The most common types of prebiotics come in the form of soluble fiber. FOS (fructo-oligosaccharides) such as chicory root/inulin (Fibersure), oat bran, rice maltodextrin, and pectin are examples. All of the probiotics we recommend have prebiotics in their formulas. Other foods that act as prebiotics to help promote probiotic growth: legumes, tea, red wine, fruits, berries, dark chocolate (from phenol content), and nuts, seeds, and fatty fish (from fatty acids). -2007 may be known as the year our government took huge strides to ensure the safety of dietary supplements with the Adverse Events Reporting Amendment (AER) and the Good Manufacturing Practices Guidelines (GMP's). Will it be enough? Time will tell says the healthy skeptic. However, you are at an advantage because you've had an extra layer of protection all along...Nutritional Concepts! -Coming soon...Reverse Chronic Fatigue Action Plan. -More exciting news on Epigenetics research into cancer prevention and NIH funding. -Please read our comments regarding the controversial results of two recent studies: Fruits and Vegetables provide no cancer shield and Selenium supplements raise risk of type 2 Diabetes. -There was too much important information revealed in July to fit into this update (including Bonnie's shingles remedy and an unknown statin side-effect). However, you can find it all in our blog. |
