While We Were on Hiatus.
You Are What Your Parents Eat.
Epigenetics as a study is still in its infancy. The idea is that genes are also influenced by their environment, rather than a change in the actual gene itself like a mutation. Previously, researchers found that children born to parents during the Dutch famine at the end of World War II suffered from glucose intolerance and cardiovascular disease. Spanish researchers in an upcoming issue of Biochimie found that, within a single generation, nutrients made an impact. Polish researchers published in this month's issue of the Canadian Journal of Psychology and Pharmacology studied chromatin, the chemical mixture in which DNA sits. They found that nutrients can create epigenetic marks, as well as mutations.

The good news is nutrients can also change chromatin and epigenetic marks for the better. The research finds that eating well can have positive benefits for your descendants. Omega-3 fatty acids, choline, folic acid, and vitamin B-12, to name a few, will improve your children's chances for good health and long lives.

GSE Adulterant Alert

The American Herbal Products Association (AHPA) recently added Grapefruit Seed Extract (GSE) as a supplement that is frequently adulterated. We have recommended NutriBiotic GSE brand for two decades. Laboratory assays have consistently shown no adulteration. NutriBiotic has also stated this in writing. We are very confident in NutriBiotic. We cannot vouch for any other GSE brand, however.

Metagenics Supplement Name Changes
Metagenics recently changed the product names of several products we dispense. Please note that there have been no changes to the ingredient formulas in these supplements.

EPA/DHA Extra Strength Enteric is now OmegaGenics 500

Proboulardi is now Ultra Flora Acute Care

Ultra Flora Plus DF is now Ultra Flora Balance

Medication and Medical Procedure Warning
Our last warning was only six weeks ago. Yet, it is amazing how many warnings have transpired since then, including antibiotics, bariatric surgery, colonoscopy, hypertension medication, oral steroids, statins, and more. This version of medication and procedure warning is available to NCI Well Connect subscribers only.

How Does Johnson & Johnson Live With Itself?

The announcement this week that they would remove all harmful chemicals from their products by 2015 is a mea culpa of epic proportions. No apology for over 50 years of poisoning customers, including infants with their baby shampoo?

Formaldehyde, which last year was identified by government scientists as a carcinogen, is released over time by common preservatives like quaternium-15 and DMDM hydantoin, which appear on Johnson & Johnson labels. 1,4 dioxane, which has been linked to cancer in animal studies, is created during a process commonly used to make other ingredients gentler on the skin.

The company also plans to phase out other ingredients that have been linked to health problems, including phthalates, several fragrance ingredients, triclosan, and parabens.

Certainly, Johnson & Johnson is in a quandary, by portraying itself as willing to make extensive changes while simultaneously reassuring consumers that its existing products are safe. The company has experienced serious recalls and quality lapses in recent years.
