The Importance of Glycemic
Index/Load |
366 million people are living
with diabetes worldwide and one
person dies every 7 seconds from the
disease. Four recent studies
highlight the importance of glycemic
index/load in reducing risk.
Although lifestyle-induced
weight reduction improves insulin
resistance in prediabetic
individuals, postprandial
hyperinsulinemia is reduced only
when a low Glycemic Index diet is
consumed. In contrast, a high
Glycemic Index diet impairs
pancreatic and intestinal cell
function despite significant weight
reduction. These findings highlight
the important role of the gut in
mediating the effects of a low
Glycemic diet on type 2 diabetes
risk reduction. AmJCN
A high Glycemic Load diet was a
predictor of incident hearing loss,
as was higher intake of total
carbohydrate. Hence, high
postprandial glycemia might be a
potential underlying biological
mechanism in the development of
age-related hearing loss. JNutr
A low Glycemic load diet
resulted in longer pregnancy
duration, greater infant head
circumference, and improved maternal
cardiovascular risk factors.
Large-scale studies are warranted to
evaluate whether dietary
intervention during pregnancy aimed
at lowering Glycemic Load may be
useful in the prevention of
prematurity and other adverse
maternal and infant outcomes.
AmJCN
A lifestyle that
includes a low Glycemic Diet can
improve metabolic risk profiles in
men and women. Prospective studies
examining glycemic index, glycemic
load, and metabolic syndrome that
control for cardiorespiratory
fitness are needed. JADA
