Vitamin D Deficiency Reality
Bonnie and Steve: When it comes to addressing your vitamin D levels, we can never be too vigilant. As we customarily do about once per quarter, here are some recent studies to hit home the fact that vitamin D levels should always be optimal.
  • According to a new study in ESC Heart Failure, heart failure was 12 times more likely in older persons with vitamin D deficiency.
  • Vitamin D3 supplementation can improve glucose tolerance and reduce cardiovascular mortality among subjects with different stages of glucose intolerance, according to a study in the September issue of The Journal of Nutrition.
  • Vitamin D deficiency in expectant mothers during pregnancy has a negative effect on the social development and motor skills of pre-school age children, a study in the British Journal of Nutrition recently reported.
  • Mothers who take a vitamin D3 supplements during pregnancy could help prevent their newborns prevent asthma and respiratory infections, say scientists in theJournal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology.
  • Vitamin D deficiency may help identify whether a woman is at long-term risk for multiple sclerosis (MS), according to researchers in Neurology. Compared with women with adequate levels of vitamin D, the risk of developing MS about 9 years later was 43% greater for women with vitamin D deficiency and 27% greater for those with vitamin D insufficiency. In addition, after vitamin D levels were increased to 50, there was a 39% reduction in risk of MS.
