Dear Valued Client

Battle Cold, Flu Naturally.
Cold & Flu October brings in the chill as well as infection! Optimize your immune system by adhering to the following (see link below):

Important note: we have heard recently from several clients who have had sinus infections and went on a course of antibiotics. Research has shown time and again that antibiotics are mostly ineffective for sinus infections because they are almost always FUNGAL, not bacterial. Please have your doctor get a culture to confirm that the sinus infection is indeed bacterial before starting an unnecessary antibiotic.

Top Ten Anti-Aging Skin Care Tips (for Adults).
healthyskin In no way do we consider ourselves experts in skin care. However, we thought these ten tips would be helpful to incorporate into your lifestyle (if you have not done so already).

Ten Tips.

The Power of the Pomegranate.
pomegranate Every once in a while we feature a fruit or vegetable because it's health benefits are so amazing.

We have been touting pomegranate considerably over the last few years. When it's all said and done, the pomegranate, as it has for centuries, will outlast other "hyped" superfruits in its category such as: acai, mangosteen, goji berry, and noni.

Eat Better Together Month.
familydinner October highlights the family dinner for its importance emotionally and physically. Family dining reduces the risk of obesity because home-cooked or prepared meals are more balanced and less caloric than if eating out. Family meals foster more family discussion and the likelihood that there will be a feeling of fullness (which usually takes about 20 minutes after beginning to eat), thus lessening the chance of overeating. Family dining also instills proper, life long eating habits.

And for those of you who say that it is too hard to prepare "home-cooked" meals, feast on the following study:

October Announcements.
announce -We have mentioned nanotechnology numerous times as an emerging technology. Simply put, it has and will continue to change our lives in ways we cannot even imagine (some good and some bad). However, at this point in time, safety data is nonexistent and for this reason we do not recommend using it in food or supplements at this time. A task force formed by the FDA concurs with our conclusions. The task force is asking the FDA to develop guidance on testing methods for the purpose of assessing safety and quality of nanoscale materials. The task force also suggested that any product containing nanoparticles be labeled as such until safety can be assured.

-Magnesium deficiency increases risk for colorectal cancer. Not only does this study focus on magnesium, but explains in detail how in the US, we consume way too much calcium, which may increase colorectal cancer risk.

-We just recently learned from a client that there are two products on the market called "BioPure Protein." They are both whey protein powder, but their ingredients are VASTLY different. The product we recommend, Metagenics BioPure Protein, is derived from grass-fed organic New Zealand cows. It has naturally-occurring immunoglobulins for added benefit and no sweetener. The other product, Biochem BioPure Whey Protein Isolate, is not organic, contains artificial flavor, and sucralose (the artificial sweetener Splenda). Please take note!

-A new study showing vitamin C's cancer-fighting properties.

Dental Hygiene vs. Halloween.
halloween Is it just a coincidence that National Dental Hygiene Month falls in October? We think not. Halloween, more than any other occasion, is a free-for-all for gorping down thousands of sugary, chemical-laden, empty calories.

Does it make you cringe? Weeks of parties, school events, and trick-or-treating increase your child's (and sometimes your) candy/sweet consumption ten-fold over any other time of the year.

Do you find your child's attention span off, emotional and physical highs and lows more pronounced? More immune-depressed than usual?

All the excess sugar and chemicals help induce these symptoms. Here are a few ideas to make Halloween a bit healthier:

1. Trick-or-treating: what to do with all the candy! If you are an enterprising parent or child, turn that candy into cash! We have used the following method for two generations of Minsky children. Tell your child that for every piece of candy, they will receive a nickel or dime (your choice). When you explain to them what it can add up to, and they can use the $ to spend as they wish, they usually jump at the chance. Don't forget to let them know that they can still eat a piece or two of their spoils (if interested).

2. School Parties or Events: we always recommend kids eating healthy snacks instead of candy. Although, if your child is going to eat candy, try to accompany them with their own candy (free of artificial ingredients and hydrogenated fats) and always, ALWAYS accompany it with a healthy fat (like nuts/seeds) or lean protein (jerky, deli turkey, etc.). This will protect against blood sugar highs and lows.

3. Handing Out Candy: do your visiting trick-or-treaters a favor. If you are going to pass out candy, try to offer the best of the worst (free of artificial sweeteners, artificial flavors, artificial colors, hydrogenated or partially-hydrogenated fats).

Top Alkaline Bottled Waters.
gerolsteiner A client who was looking for ways to optimize his acid/alkaline balance asked about this. One's optimal ratio should be 60% alkaline and 40% acid.

This can be achieved by focusing on eating foods that are more alkaline. Of course, many of the foods we cherish and eat most often are predominately acid! Drinking alkaline water is another way you can help tip balance in your favor.

Scholarship Established by Bonnie Minsky.
UIC To provide incentive for talented members of the Public Health field to choose nutritional counseling, a scholarship has been established in Bonnie Minsky's name at the University of Illinois-Chicago School of Public Health.

Every year for the next ten years, one student that meets rigorous specifications focusing on nutrition will be chosen for the scholarship.

Bonnie received her Masters Degree at the University of Illinois-Chicago School of Public Health and considers the educational experience as one of her most gratifying.

Bonnie views the scholarship as an opportunity to produce well-rounded nutrition counselors: "I benefited tremendously by getting an MPH. It gives you a tremendous advantage as a nutritionist because you can view the whole scope of preventive health as seen in many countries, not just the U.S."
