Plan to Fight Daily Stressors
Bonnie and Steve: A shorter life may be the price an organism pays for coping with the natural assaults of daily living, according to researchers at the National Institutes of Health. Their findings appearing in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Researchers used fruit flies to examine the relationship between lifespan and signaling proteins that defend the body against environmental stressors, such as bacterial infections and cold temperatures. Since flies and mammals share some of the same molecular pathways, the results demonstrate how the environment can affect longevity in humans.

Not surprisingly, the focus was on a protein that moderates how flies respond to inflammation. The finding provides evidence for one theory of aging, which suggests longevity depends on a delicate balance between proinflammatory proteins, thought to promote aging, and anti-inflammatory proteins, believed to prolong life. These inflammatory factors are influenced by what an organism experiences in its every day environment.

The research reveals that mitigating excess inflammation induced by signaling proteins via our environment and lifestyle is a key to extending life.

This is why we are so incessant about the fact that we cannot glean all the nutrients we need from food alone. We need to supplement to overcome the excess inflammation we create for ourselves because of the modern lifestyle.

We must take a multifactorial approach to tampering excess inflammation. It starts with providing optimal nutrients, avoiding food reactors, setting up an optimal environment to live in, exercise, which is one of the best forms of inflammation reduction, and stress management techniques.
