NCI Well Connect Mid-Week Brief
October 4, 2017
Dear Steve,

DID YOU KNOW that there is another disturbing wellness trend you need to be wary of? Vaping essential oils is gaining traction. We cannot emphasize enough how awful this may be for your health. Aside from creating immediate contact inflammation, irritation of nasal, sinus, and lung tissue, essential oils are highly allergenic and come with side effects, especially in oils such as kava kava and eucalyptus. Please, please, please do not vape essential oils!

Have a happy, healthy day! Steve and Bonnie
Breakfast Lowers Cardiac Risk
Bonnie and Steve: Skipping breakfast is associated with an increased risk of atherosclerosis, or the hardening and narrowing of arteries due to a build-up of plaque, according to research published last week in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology.

We love this study because the researchers examined male and female subjects who were free from cardiovascular or chronic kidney disease when the study began.

Atherosclerosis was observed more frequently among participants who skipped breakfast and was also higher in participants who consumed low-energy breakfasts compared to breakfast consumers. Additionally, cardiometabolic risk markers were more prevalent in those who skipped breakfast and low-energy breakfast consumers compared to breakfast consumers. Participants who skipped breakfast had the greatest waist circumference, body mass index, blood pressure, blood lipids and fasting glucose levels.

Participants who skipped breakfast were more likely to have an overall unhealthy lifestyle, including poor overall diet, frequent alcohol consumption and smoking. They were also more likely to be hypertensive and overweight or obese.

On the heels of circadian rhythm researchers being awarded the Nobel Prize last week for discovering its link to numerous adverse health effects, one of the ways we keep our circadian rhythm running smoothly is to eat breakfast.

One of the deterrents with breakfast is the association with only a select group of foods, many that are high in carbohydrates and saturated fats. However, breakfast does not have to be this limiting if you perceive it as any other meal.

If you put together breakfasts with leftovers from dinner from the night before, or take a lean protein and pair it with a vegetable and fruit serving, you don't have to limit yourself to the Standard American Breakfast.
