NCI Well Connect Mid-Week Brief
January 11, 2017
Dear Steve,

DID YOU KNOW that we have a safe, inexpensive alternative for the much maligned class of reflux medications called PPIs? Alka Support can also benefit us in many more ways.
  • provide greater energy
  • help reduce acid reflux and other digestive symptoms
  • help reduce food intolerance symptoms by as much as 40%
  • provide athletes with better endurance and recovery after a heavy workout
  • help reduce P.O.T.S. symptoms
  • help reduce hangover symptoms
We have seen all of these benefits clinically. Alka Support is nothing more than a sodium and potassium bicarbonate tablet.  It is safe to take up to two tablets daily on a long-term basis and more on an "as-needed" basis.

Ask us if Alka Support is right for you.

Have a happy, healthy day. Steve and Bonnie
Lactose, Obesity, and 23andMe
Bonnie and Steve: We have known for a while that lactose intolerance is a multifactorial issue. It is not just the inability to produce lactase enzyme, which breaks down lactose sugar, that causes symptoms. Many who have blood sugar issues react adversely to lactose because it is a highly glycemic sugar.

We now know there is a genetic component. One of the wellness traits that are included in 23andMe's genetic screening is lactose intolerance. For those of you who have gotten the screening, on your personal 23andMe home page, the result will say either "Likely Tolerant" or "Likely Intolerant" for the lactose intolerance gene.

While we are not convinced that this is the only gene related to lactose intolerance, we are more convinced now that the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition's January issue published a new study about the gene that 23andMe screens for.

The authors state that this specific gene is not only associated with lactose intolerance, but increases the risk for overweight/obesity in young adults if not accounted for. In essence, avoiding lactose because you have this genetic knowledge is a new preventive tool.

Specifically, the lactase −13910C&T polymorphism revealed significant associations with the obesity-related variables such as higher BMI, fat mass and weight.

From this new knowledge, we would suggest that if your 23andMe results reveal that you are "Likely Intolerant," avoiding lactose should be considered under the guidance of a licensed health professional for you and your family. If you already have been diagnosed with lactose intolerance, let this act as reaffirmation to stay on the "straight and narrow"!
