Silent Memory Loss and the Nutrients to Help It.

A recent journal Neurology study of relatively healthy elderly adults found that those with diets rich in several vitamins and omega-3 fatty acids had better cognitive function and less brain atrophy associated with Alzheimer's disease than their peers with diets less abundant in these nutrients.

The study identified 3 distinct nutrient biomarker patterns (NBPs) in blood that are related to cognitive performance and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) measures of brain aging. One was high in plasma B vitamins (B1, B2, B6, folate, and B12), as well as vitamins C, D, and E, and the other was high in plasma marine omega-3 fatty acids. The higher the levels of these nutrients, the better the subjects performed cognitively and had more brain volume.

A third NBP characterized by a high trans fat pattern was consistently associated with less favorable cognitive function and less total cerebral brain volume.

"To our knowledge, this is the first study to apply principal component analysis to biological markers of diet," the researchers note. Overall, the participants had good nutritional status, although 7% were deficient in vitamin B12 and 25% were deficient in vitamin D. A strength of the study is the investigators' use of plasma nutrient levels rather than self-reported dietary patterns, which gets around recall errors and biases that can occur when individuals report their usual diets.

In case you missed this last week, here is our prescription for starting the year off right.

  2. Get back on your individualized supplement regimen.
If you have gotten off track, now is the perfect time to start. While eating optimally comprises 75 percent of your nutrient intake, supplements comprise the other 25 percent. We offer monthly supplement discounts and a free loyalty reward program.

  4. Need fresh menu, recipe, shopping, and lifestyle ideas?
Food consultant Carolyn Martinelli lives wellness 24-7, so who better to help you navigate a difficult eating plan and keep you "wellness fresh," all while managing a hectic lifestyle? Care is in the office on Wednesdays and Thursdays.
  5. Avoid your food reactors.
The hottest food trend of 2012 will be targeting those with food intolerances. Why? We are finally coming to the realization that food intolerances occur much more frequently than once believed. Everyone is different in how and what they react to. Luckily, we have been treating clients with food intolerances for over fifteen years and have the most accurate, battle-tested screening methods to accomplish this.
  6. Cleanse and Detox in a smart way.
One of the most popular ways to begin a new year is to do a cleanse or detox. Unfortunately, certain methods can do more harm than good. Our Smart Detox and Smart Cleanse Action Plans have been used safely and successfully by clients for years. They can be purchased at our website or are free to NCI Well Connect subscribers.
  7. Choose mental, exercise routine to fit your individual needs.
Methods for exercising your mind and body should be just as individualized as your food choices. Most importantly, make sure your routine fits your lifestyle capabilities.
