Alternative Sweeteners - Bonnie Approved.
--------------------
Stevia. Most of you who are clients know that we are and have been big proponents of stevia (pictured here). Within the next
few years, stevia will explode into the mainstream market, partially due to Coca Cola and Cargill pushing to get it approved as a food additive, not
just a dietary supplement (its designation to date). Approval as a food additive will open up a plethora of product opportunities for food companies.
Our hope is that stevia will overtake and far surpass the crop of awful artificial sweeteners that dominate the market. New development: a
study to be published in the 1/08 issue of Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry found stevia to be very high in antioxidants, thus reducing DNA
damage.Xylitol. This polyol (alcohol ester of sugar) has several benefits. First, it fights tooth decay. Many of you have probably heard about it through your dentist. Second, xylitol is extremely low calorie and glycemic load. One note of caution: it can have a laxative effect in large amounts. Also, much of the xylitol on the market is corn-derived. For those of you who are corn intolerant, seek out xylitol products derived from birch bark, such as Xylichew Gum that we carry. Lo han. This fruit offers sweet compounds that resist human degradation and lack calories and glycemic properties. While Lo han has extremely low toxicity in rats, long term human studies are lacking. Agave nectar. While considered a sugar, it has very low glycemic index and load. It is also well tolerated because of its low allergenicity. This would be our recommendation if you do not tolerate or enjoy the previous three suggestions. |

MANopause?
--------------------
Our mid-November "Special Report" installment explains that testosterone levels in men declines one percent a year
after the age of 50. The decline comes with an array of "change of life" symptoms such as loss of muscle mass, fatigue, depression, erectile
dysfunction, and even hot flashes. The condition is hard to test for and even more difficult for a man to discuss, so it usually flies under the
radar. However, as studies begin to link low testosterone with infertility, heart disease, cognitive decline, and bone loss, practitioners are
beginning to take notice.
In a groundbreaking study that appears in the December issue of Circulation, researchers claim that higher circulating levels of
testosterone appear to protect men from all manner of causes of death. Subjects in the upper 25 percent of natural testosterone levels had a 41
percent lower risk of dying from heart attack, stroke, other cardiovascular conditions, cancer, and all other causes of death. |
