January 2, 2012 |
Dear Valued Subscriber,
Happy New Year. We
hope 2012 will be healthy,
happy, and fruitful. Here is our
prescription for starting the
year off right.
-
Make an appointment
with Bonnie to get back on
track.
Medicare
and private insurance has
made it easier than ever to
get our services covered.
With a simple doctor's
prescription, we can give
you a Superbill to submit
for medical nutrition
therapy services or wellness
visits (Medicare allows a
wellness visit with an Rx).
- Get back on your
individualized supplement
regimen.
If you
have gotten off track, now
is the perfect time to
start. While eating
optimally comprises 75
percent of your nutrient
intake, supplements comprise
the other 25 percent. We
offer monthly supplement
discounts and a free loyalty
reward program.
- Stay on the
straight and narrow with NCI
Well Connect.
Our subscription eNewsletter
is your weekly nutritionist,
providing myriad ways to
improve your mind and body
through cutting edge
wellness research and
recommendations. You get 90
percent more than what is in
our free eNewsletter, including
access to our entire
self-help Action
Plan library and Natural
Foods Shopping List,which
is updated monthly. To
further motivate you, we are
offering a50%
subscription discount for
the month of January ($49.99
instead of $99.99). That is
only one dollar per issue
per week. Order your
subscription today and we
will email you today's
issue, which has a very
important Medication
and Supplement Alert.
- Need fresh menu,
recipe, shopping, and
lifestyle ideas?
Food consultant Carolyn
Martinelli lives wellness
24-7, so who better to help
you navigate a difficult
eating plan and keep you
"wellness fresh," all while
managing a hectic lifestyle?
Care is in the office on
Wednesdays and Thursdays.
- Avoid your food
reactors.
The
hottest food trend of 2012
will be targeting those with
food intolerances. Why? We
are finally coming to the
realization that food
intolerances occur much more
frequently than once
believed. Everyone is
different in how and what
they react to. Luckily, we
have been treating clients
with food intolerances for
over 15 years and have the
most accurate, battle-tested
screening method with our
Biotrition Food Intolerance
Test.
- Cleanse and
Detox in a smart way.
One of the most popular ways
to begin a new year is to do
a cleanse or detox.
Unfortunately, certain
methods can do more harm
than good. Our Smart
Detox and Smart
Cleanse Action
Plans have been used safely
and successfully by clients
for years. They can be
purchased at our website or
are free to NCI Well Connect
subscribers.
- Choose a mental,
exercise routine to fit your
needs.
Methods
for exercising your mind and
body should be just as
individualized as your food
choices. Most importantly,
make sure your routine fits
your lifestyle capabilities.
Have a happy, healthy
week. Bonnie and Steve.

Inflamed? You Better Take Your
Supplements. |
|
It is a little known fact that
blood concentrations of several
trace vitamins and minerals decrease
because of the systemic inflammatory
response. This effect was
investigated recently in the
December issue ofAmerican
Journal of Clinical Nutrition.
Between 2001 and 2011, the
results (2217 blood samples from
1303 patients) of routine
micronutrient screens (plasma zinc,
copper, selenium, and vitamins A,
B-6, C, and E) and all vitamin D
results (4327 blood samples from
3677 patients) were examined.
C-reactive protein (CRP)
concentrations were measured as a
marker of the severity of
inflammation and categorized into 6
groups; for each group, plasma
micronutrient concentrations and
percentage changes were calculated.
Except for copper and
vitamin E, all plasma micronutrient
concentrations decreased with
increasing severities of the acute
inflammatory response. For zinc.
selenium, vitamins A, C, D, and B-6,
the magnitude of the decrease was
significant, ranging between 19% and
53%. For selenium and vitamins B-6
and C, this occurred with only
slightly increased C-reactive
protein concentrations.
For
those who claim that supplemental
vitamins and minerals are not
crucial, in individuals with chronic
inflammatory conditions, let this
study be a reminder of how important
supplemental nutrients are. As we
have known for years, your body can
severely deplete the amount of
nutrients available to you when
chronically inflamed.

Important Medicare Announcement |
|
The
U.S. Medicare program will cover
counseling for obesity. The
Centers for Medicare & Medicaid
Services (CMS) said obesity
counseling and screening has been
added to its portfolio of preventive
services.
Screening for obesity and
counseling for eligible
beneficiaries by primary care
providers are covered under the new
benefit.
For patients deemed to be
obese based on body mass index
measures, the benefit would include
one face-to-face counseling visit
each week for one month and one
face-to-face counseling visit every
other week for an additional five
months.
Medicare patients who lose at
least 6.6 pounds (3 kilograms)
during the first six months of
counseling would be eligible to
receive addition face-to-face
counseling once a month for an
additional six months for up to a
total of 12 months of counseling,
the agency said.
Steve - for our services,
you would simply need to get an Rx
from your doctor with a diagnosis
for obesity counseling. We would
give you a receipt with the same
diagnosis. Then, you would submit
the claim to Medicare. In summary,
they are now covering counseling
services for diabetes, preventive
care or "wellness visit", and
obesity.
