Medication
vs. Supplements
|
Let
us first acknowledge that medication
and dietary supplements often serve
very different purposes. However, more
and more, "lifestyle
medication" is being prescribed
to be taken for the long-term. The
following data focuses mostly on this
type of medication.
If you know us well, this is a battle
that medication could not possibly win
against supplements in the court of
Nutritional Concepts' opinion. Maybe
so. But our motivation is to provide
you food for thought as we bring in a
new decade.
Here's a snapshot from what was
discovered just in the month of
December.
Medication
- Antibiotics
can cause severe birth defects in
pregnant women. Archives
of Pediatric and Adolescent
Medicine
- Antidepressants
increase risk of death and stroke
in post-menopausal women. Archives
of Internal Medicine
- Aspirin
is ineffective for preventing
unexplained, recurrent
miscarriages. 51st
annual meeting of the American
Society of Hematology
- Antipsychotics
increase the risk of death in the
elderly and are associated with
weight gain, hyperglycemia, and
hyperlipidemia in persons of all
age groups. Biological
Psychiatry
- Even
the Most Common Meds Pose Threats.
Article
from LA Times
- Government
Accountability Office (GAO) said
the FDA still has not restructured
its staff to better monitor drug
safety.
- H1N1
vaccine made by Sanofi Pasteur and
Novartis were recalled due to low
potency. Centers
for Disease Control
- Menopause:
Brought to You by Big Pharma. Article
from NY Times
- Tamiflu
benefits are scarce in healthy
people and has yet to be proven
safe or effective. British
Medical Journal
Supplements
- The
American Dietetic Association
finally admits that supplements
help people meet their nutritional
needs. This is a tremendous step
for the ADA. They must tread
lightly because some of their
largest benefactors have large
stakes in the production of
medications.
- Antioxidants
reduce the amount of new polyps in
the large bowel by 40 percent
compared to placebo. American
Association for Cancer Research
- The
combination of calcium and vitamin
D normalize the health of cells in
the colon and rectum. Cancer,
Epidemiology, Biomarkers, and
Prevention
- Compounds
derived from the spice turmeric
help prevent the spread of breast
cancer by limiting the stem cells
that fuels a tumor's growth. Breast
Cancer Research and Treatment
- Folic
Acid supplements taken during
pregnancy reduce the risk of
congenital heart defects in
children by twenty percent. European
Heart Journal
- Magnesium
supplementation reduces risk of
coronary heart disease in men. Journal
of the American Academy of Nurse
Practitioners
- Milk
Thistle (Silymarin) cuts liver
toxicity from all chemotherapy. Cancer,
National Cancer Institute
- Vitamin
D at optimal levels decreases the
risk of numerous types of cancer,
cognitive impairment, and
dementia. American
Journal Lifestyle Medicine;
Neurology
Do
not misconstrue our message. We are
not condemning medication. Certain
medications prescribed when necessary
can provide benefits that are well
substantiated by research. However,
the amount of medication the average
American is prescribed, as well as the
motivation to create these drugs, has
veered recklessly off track and needs
to be righted.
It is apparent that any health reform
legislation will not address this
issue. Going forward, when evaluating
your health, take a long, hard look at
your medication(s). It is important to
discuss with your doctor if each
medication is necessary and to
understand why.
Finally, if considering a newly
approved medication, do not make a
decision until you read
this first.
