Dear Valued Subscriber,

Did you know that according to a new study in Journal of the National Cancer Institute, higher dietary glycemic load and total carbohydrate intake were significantly associated with an increased risk of recurrence and mortality in stage III colon cancer patients. These findings support the role of energy balance factors in colon cancer progression and may offer potential opportunities to improve patient survival.

Have a happy, healthy week. Bonnie and Steve Minsky

The Most Successful Aging Model.

Most experts believe that the most successful three component model to successful aging was developed by researchers Rowe and Kahn in 1997.

  • Absence and low risk of disease
  • High psychological and physical functioning
  • Engagement with life

Now, Chinese researchers in this month's Gerontologist took the model a step further by breaking down successful aging into six indicators:

  1. Chronic diseases: The presence of hypertension, diabetes, heart disease, stroke, cancer, respiratory tract disease, rheumatism/arthritis, liver or gallbladder disease, gastrointestinal disorders, and kidney disease.
  2. Physical function difficulties: Difficulties with activities of daily living, which include eating, dressing, transferring, bathing, walking indoors, and using the toilet, and instrumental activities of daily living, which include shopping for groceries, managing money, traveling alone by car or train, heavy housework, light housework, and making phone calls.
  3. Depressive symptoms: Depressive symptoms measured using the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale.
  4. Emotional social support: The degree to which support is received concerns how family, relatives, and friends care about them, listen to them, are reliable when they are ill, and provide satisfactory care and support. It is also important to gauge the degree to which family and friends consult with the elderly adult for his/her opinions and the degree to which the elderly adult feels that he/she is helpful to his/her family or friends.
  5. Social participation: Social participation includes paid or unpaid work or participation in social groups, such as volunteer groups, community groups, religious groups, occupational associations, political groups or parties, social service groups, clan associations, elderly groups, or elderly colleges.
  6. Economic satisfaction

Not surprisingly, the subjects in the most successful aging group had few chronic diseases, good physical function, few depressive symptoms, stable social support, high or gradually declining participation in productive activities, and high economic satisfaction.
