January 2, 2012
Dear Valued Subscriber,
Happy New Year. We hope 2013 will be healthy, happy, and fruitful. Here is our prescription for starting the year off right.
  1. Make an appointment with Bonnie to get back on track.
Medicare and private insurance has made it easier than ever to get our services covered. With a simple doctor's prescription, we can give you a Superbill to submit for medical nutrition therapy services or wellness visits (Medicare allows a wellness visit with an Rx).
  2. Follow your individualized supplement regimen.
If you have gotten off track, now is the perfect time to start. While eating optimally comprises 75 percent of your nutrient intake, supplements comprise the other 25 percent. We offer monthly supplement discounts and a free loyalty reward program.
  3. Stay on the straight and narrow with NCI Well Connect.
Our subscription eNewsletter provides myriad ways to improve your mind and body through cutting edge wellness research and recommendations. You get 90 percent more than what is in our free eNewsletter, including access to our entire self-help Action Plan library and Natural Foods Shopping List, which is updated frequently. To further motivate you, we are offering 40% OFF for the month of January ($49.99 from $79.99). That is only one dollar per issue per week. Order your subscription here and you will be entered into a raffle to win one of six immune or detoxification support supplement prizes worth $50 in value.
  4. Need fresh menu, recipe, shopping, and lifestyle ideas?
Food consultant Carolyn Martinelli lives wellness 24-7, so who better to help you navigate a difficult eating plan and keep you "wellness fresh," all while managing a hectic lifestyle? Care is in the office on Wednesdays and Thursdays.
  5. Avoid your food reactors.
As it was in 2012, the hottest wellness trend in 2013 will be targeting food intolerances. Why? We are finally coming to the realization that food intolerances occur much more frequently than once believed. Everyone is different in how and what they react to. Luckily, we have been treating clients with food intolerances for over 16 years and have the most accurate, battle-tested screening method with our Biotrition Food Intolerance Test.
  6. Cleanse and Detox intelligently.
One of the most popular ways to ring in the new year is to do a cleanse or detox. Unfortunately, some can do more harm than good. Our Smart Detox and Smart Cleanse Action Plans have been used safely and successfully by our clients for years. Purchase at our website or are free to NCI Well Connect subscribers.
  7. Choose a mental, exercise routine to fit your needs.
Methods for exercising your mind and body should be just as individualized as your food choices. Most importantly, make sure your routine fits your lifestyle capabilities.
Have a happy, healthy week. Bonnie and Steve.

Healthy Behaviors 2013.

No researcher has ever tried to quantify the day-to-day hazards of bad or healthy habits. British statistician David Spiegelhalter, in a report published in British Medical Journal, attemptedto quantify which habits have a greater impact on life expectancy.

To do this, he created a unit of measure called a "microlife," which corresponds to 30 minutes of life expectancy. Here's how different habits stack up (estimates are based on various life expectancy studies and hours gained or lost are per day of exposure).

  • Smoking (15-24 cigarettes per day): 5 hours
  • Alcohol Drinking: First drink, + 30 minutes; -15 minutes per subsequent drink per day
  • Sedentary behavior: -30 minutes per two hours of TV watching
  • Eating red meat: -30 minutes per three ounces of red meat consumed
  • Fruit & vegetables: five servings per day: +two hours
  • Exercise: +one hour for first 20 minutes, +30 minutes for every additional 40 minutes.
Fruit With Medicinal Properties.

The following should give you impetus to choose fruit over sugary foods in your quest for healthy behaviors.

Watermelon - Hypertension: Watermelon contains amino acids which help the blood vessels dilate naturally, countermanding endothelial dysfunction and reducing blood pressure.

Cherry - Inflammation/Pain: Compounds within cherries known as anthrocyanins have been shown to be effective for reducing pain and inflammation.

Lemon - Kidney Stones: Lemon juice therapy has been shown to be a reasonable alternative for patients with kidney stones.

Pomegranate - Hormones: Pomegranate contains potent plant estrogens which do not stimulate unregulated cell proliferation, and may function as an ideal "back up" ovary for women's hormone health.

Cranberries - UTI: The extract of this berry has been shown as effective in the prevention of recurrent urinary tract infections in older women, without increasing the risk of antibiotic resistance/super-infection and/or fungal infection.

Coconut - Gastric Ulcers: both the milk and the water of the coconut have been shown to have anti-ulcerogenic properties against NSAID drug-induced mucosal erosion.

Plantain - Diarrhea: Plantain has been used to treat diarrhea by traditional cultures as a folk medicine, but clinical research now confirms its value in the dietary management of persistent diarrhea in hospitalized children, in relation to diarrheal duration, weight gain and costs.

Strawberries - Heart Disease: Many red fruits and berries have now been shown to be valuable for heart health, but strawberry is beginning to emerge as uniquely beneficial to cardiovascular health. Strawberry powder has been shown to improve the lipid profile and oxidative stress markers, and markers of atherosclerosis, in women with metabolic syndrome. Strawberry extract has also been shown to relax the lining of the blood vessels, which may reduce high blood pressure and disburden the heart muscle from over-exertion.

Important Medicare Announcement

The U.S. Medicare program covers counseling for obesity. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) said obesity counseling and screening has been added to its portfolio of preventive services.

Screening for obesity and counseling for eligible beneficiaries by primary care providers are covered under the new benefit.

For patients deemed to be obese based on body mass index measures, the benefit would include one face-to-face counseling visit each week for one month and one face-to-face counseling visit every other week for an additional five months.

Medicare patients who lose at least 6.6 pounds (3 kilograms) during the first six months of counseling would be eligible to receive addition face-to-face counseling once a month for an additional six months for up to a total of 12 months of counseling, the agency said.

Steve - for our services, you would simply need to get an Rx from your doctor with a diagnosis for obesity counseling. We would give you a receipt with the same diagnosis. Then, you would submit the claim to Medicare. In summary, with a doctor's prescription, Medicare is now covering counseling services for diabetes, preventive care or "wellness visit", and obesity.
