Put Out the Inflammatory Fire
Bonnie and Steve: Nothing impedes optimal health more than inflammation. Inflammation is often the result of a confluence of factors. When it cannot be resolved, it can lead to a host of acute and chronic conditions that are the leading causes of death in the US.

There are myriad ways to "put out the fire". Here is a mix of our own stalwarts along with the latest research.

Resolve the pain. There are are few things more maddening than not being able to resolve chronic pain. For many, not even powerful opioids do the trick. The discovery of two highly concentrated chemicals from omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA aims to change the inability to resolve pain for good. Ask us about specialized pro-resolving mediators (SPMs) or read more about it in our "SPMs and Osteoarthritis" piece later in this newsletter.

Convert white fat cells into energy-consuming brown slimming cells.Unfortunately, the inflammatory responses that often occur in overweight people block this kind of fat cell conversion, according to Cell Reports. Resolve the inflammation, start the fat burning process.

Lower C-Reactive Protein (CRP) levels. CRP is a common blood test associated with the inflammatory process. If you have come in to see us, you would know if your CRP is high and one of the first things we would do with you is address it through diet and lifestyle. A new study from the January issue for Nutrients found that probiotics may reduce serum CRP levels by decreasing inflammatory cytokines and biomarkers that play a role in the development of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Quercetin for inflammation. Researchers from a study from the October issue of theJournal of the American College of Nutrition examined female rheumatoid arthritis patients who were given 500 milligrams quercetin or a placebo daily for eight weeks. Women who received quercetin had less early morning stiffness, morning pain, and pain after activity compared to pretreatment levels. Those who received a placebo experienced no changes.

Eliminate sugar. Simple to say, extremely difficult to execute. There is no bigger inflammatory trigger than sugar. Isn't that enough to start working at it?

Avoid food intolerances. Ingesting intolerants to food such as gluten, lactose, salicylic acid, and hundreds more assure that the fire will continue to be stoked. If you have screened for intolerances, get back to minimizing them. If you have not had a screening, now would be a great time to do our Biotrition blood test because it is not allergy season. Alternatively, you can do a guided elimination diet with our Pain Relief Diet Action Plan (order at our website or free for NCI Well Connect Members by email request).

Know you nutritional genomics. Our Pure Genomics reports produce valuable information for what you need to do if you are genetically susceptible to inflammation.

Keep moving. Physical activity is an immense inflammation extinguisher. Even if you are not the workout warrior, take steps and never sit for more than 20 minutes at a time. It's easy to get stiff when sitting for hours on end.

Up your mental game. There are a multitude of ways to keep your mind focused and less stressed. Deep breathing is a simple way to get you going.

Targeted nutrients complete the process. There are so many dietary supplements that can contribute to less inflammatory symptoms. Which ones are right for you depends greatly upon individual needs. We have seen too many examples of new clients who had taken supplements to reduce inflammation, but because they were diametrically opposed to their needs, the inflammation got worse! Using a licensed health professional is crucial.
SPMs and Osteoarthritis
Bonnie: There is strong evidence for the role of SPMs (specialized pro-resolving mediators) in resolving inflammation of the joints that is the hallmark of Osteoarthritis (OA). Receptors for SPMs are present in joints' synovial fluid.

Furthermore, the underlying cause of inflammation present in OA could be the failure of pro-resolving mediators to activate in the joints. Researchers consistently find low SPM levels in OA and Rheumatoid Arthritis patients.

The symptoms of osteoarthritis can be managed with healthy lifestyle behaviors. Getting regular physical activity, maintaining a healthy weight, and eating an anti-inflammatory diet may slow the progression of the disease. It cannot be reversed, though, so the goal of treatment is typically pain relief and maintenance of function. Adding SPMs to a healthy lifestyle, including maintaining a healthy weight, may help to ameliorate the symptoms of OA.

Steve: Traditional saunas emit direct heat. Far Infrared uses light to create heat. Far infrared run at much milder temperatures, but travels much deeper into the body, which is why you sweat more vigorously.

Far Infrared Therapy offers numerous therapeutic benefits, most importantly enhanced detoxification. Many of our clients use it to relieve painful joints, rev up metabolism, and remove buildup of heavy metals.

Far Infrared has shown to draw out 15 to 20% more heavy metals (i.e., mercury, lead, cadmium, arsenic), hormone-disrupting chemicals, sulfuric acid, ammonia, uric-acid, and fat-soluble toxins than traditional saunas.

A recent study from Age and Ageing, showed that healthy subjects whose sauna use averaged 4 to 7 times per week were 66% less likely to develop dementia at 20-year follow-up than those who used a sauna once a week. In addition, they had a 65% risk reduction for Alzheimer's Disease.

A recent study in JAMA Internal Medicine found that increased frequency of sauna bathing reduced the risk of sudden cardiac death, coronary heart disease, cardiovascular disease, and all-cause mortality.
