NCI Well Connect
February 12, 2018
Dear Steve,

DID YOU KNOW that researchers in European Journal of Preventive Cardiology calculate that standing instead of sitting for six hours would use an extra 54 calories a day? That calorie expenditure would translate to a body weight reduction of five and a half pounds in a year, assuming you didn't find other ways to make up for the calorie deficit. But studies suggest we often stealthily do make up for those lost calories, either by eating more or moving less.

If you missed last Friday's announcement, please read about the new Pure Genomics upgrade here!

Have a happy, healthy day! Steve and Bonnie

Multivitamin About-Face?
Bonnie and Steve: We are cautiously optimistic and certainly surprised by the amount of love multivitamins have gotten in medical journals recently.

The January 2018 issue of American Heart Journal reported a sizable reduction in cardiac events and mortality from any cause from high dose vitamin and mineral supplementation among patients with a history of heart attack who were not being treated with statin drugs.

The risk of a major adverse cardiac event such as heart attack, stroke, coronary revascularization, or hospitalization for angina over a seven year period who received multivitamins and minerals was 38% lower compared to those who received an oral placebo. Mortality from any cause over follow-up was 53% lower in the supplemented group.

Participants who received the vitamins and minerals also experienced a 54% lower risk of the study's secondary end point of cardiovascular mortality, stroke or recurrent heart attack. When cardiovascular mortality alone was considered, vitamin and mineral supplementation was associated with a 61% decrease in risk. Wow!!

A study in last month's Nutrients evaluate the effect of a multivitamin/mineral supplement on blood nutrient status and biomarkers of heart health risk in healthy adults (40-70 years) for eight weeks. The supplement group significantly increased circulating levels of quercetin, vitamin C, folate and vitamin B6 and B12 status compared with the placebo group. Serum homocysteine was also significantly reduced.

According to the results of a study in this month's JAMA, maternal exposure to folic acid and multivitamin supplements before and during pregnancy was associated with a reduced risk of autism spectrum disorder in the offspring compared with the offspring of mothers without such exposure.
Chiro Case Study

Addressing Bruxism
Dr. Liselotte Schuster: Did you know that chiropractic can help bruxism? Bruxism is a condition in which you grind, gnash or clench your teeth. Frequent and severe bruxism can lead to headaches, jaw, neck, face or tooth pain, tired or tight jaw muscles, a locked jaw that won't open or close completely, popping or clicking of the jaw, damaged teeth, and other problems. People who clench or grind their teeth during sleep are more likely to have other sleep disorders, such as snoring and pauses in breathing known as sleep apnea.

PubMed has abstracts describing the chiropractic and dental co-management of adult patients with symptoms of bruxism. In addition to orthodontic and splint treatment, the patients also received semiweekly chiropractic care for at least a month. The outcome was very favorable with the elimination of many symptoms. Bruxism is not limited to adults, a chiropractic case study in the Journal of Chiropractic Pediatric, Maternal and Family Health, shows reduction in bruxism of a 9 Year Old.

This subject is near and dear to my heart as I began grinding my teeth at age 3. As an adult I suffered cracked teeth and headaches so I made sure to study ways to help others with the side effects of bruxism. Many of my patients come to me already wearing a bite guard from their dentist and then notice a significant difference in their symptoms once they come in for chiropractic care. I include working inside and outside of the jaw and give specific mouth exercises. Patients report improvement in headaches, tooth pain, neck pain and less grinding and clenching. If you suffer from any of the side effects of bruxism consider adding chiropractic to your treatment program.

Far Infrared Sauna Therapy
Steve: Traditional saunas emit direct heat. Far Infrared uses light to create heat. Far infrared run at much milder temperatures, but travels much deeper into the body, which is why you sweat more vigorously.

Far Infrared Therapy offers numerous therapeutic benefits, most importantly enhanced detoxification. Many of our clients use it to relieve painful joints, rev up metabolism, and remove buildup of heavy metals.

Far Infrared has shown to draw out 15 to 20% more heavy metals (i.e., mercury, lead, cadmium, arsenic), hormone-disrupting chemicals, sulfuric acid, ammonia, uric-acid, and fat-soluble toxins than traditional saunas.

A recent study from Age and Ageing, showed that healthy subjects whose sauna use averaged 4 to 7 times per week were 66% less likely to develop dementia at 20-year follow-up than those who used a sauna once a week. In addition, they had a 65% risk reduction for Alzheimer's Disease.

Recent studies in JAMA Internal Medicine and American Journal of Hypertension found that increased frequency of sauna bathing reduced the risk of sudden cardiac death, coronary heart disease, cardiovascular disease, hypertension, and all-cause mortality.
