Dear Valued Subscriber,

Did you know that the number of Americans with celiac disease would fill 936 cruise ships? Remarkably, passengers on 843 of those ships wouldn't know they have it. Celiac sufferers double every 15 years in America.

Have a happy, healthy week. Bonnie and Steve Minsky

Habits of Dietary Supplement Users.
Contributes to Healthier Living.

Dietary supplements are used by half to two-thirds of American adults, and the evidence suggests that this usage is one component of a larger effort to develop a healthier lifestyle.

According to a study in the February issue ofNutrition Journal, dietary supplement users tend on average to be better educated and to have somewhat higher incomes than nonusers, and these factors may contribute to their health-consciousness. Dietary supplement use also tends to be more prevalent among women than among men, and the prevalence of use increases with age in both men and women.

Numerous surveys document that users of dietary supplements are significantly more likely than nonusers to have somewhat better dietary patterns, exercise regularly, maintain a healthy weight, and avoid tobacco products. While supplement users tend to have better diets than nonusers, the differences are relatively small, their diets have some substantial nutrient shortfalls, and their supplement use has been shown to improve the adequacy of nutrient intakes.

Overall, the evidence suggests that users of dietary supplements are seeking wellness and are consciously adopting a variety of lifestyle habits that they consider to contribute to healthy living.

Male Dogs Rejoice?
New FDA-Approved Sterilization.

Steve: We rarely address pets in our eNewsletter. In this case, I felt it necessary to share with you a first-hand account with my dog Loki (pictured here).

We were lucky enough to find Loki as a two-year old. He was not fixed. Eventually, we were going to get him fixed, not for behavior, but for safety reasons. In our neighborhood, coyotes are plentiful, and we did not want him running after female coyotes in heat.

My son and I were having a hard time accepting castration for Loki, so we stalled a bit. While researching for this eNewsletter, I came across a natural sterilization procedure for male dogs that was approved by the FDA in November. The more I researched, the more excited I became.

Zeuterin, a natural solution of zinc gluconate, L-Arginine, and purified water, is a 10 minute procedure in which the solution is injected by syringe into each testicle. After a few sperm cycles (about 30 days), the dog is sterilized.

We decided to have Loki "Zeutered" in January. There is only one licensed vet who currently administers Zeuterin in Illinois, so we had to drive down to University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana for the 10 minute procedure. We are happy we did. Loki did not even need anesthesia. He was sore for a few days, but his behavior is unchanged and is still intact!

You are probably wondering why we went through all the trouble and didn't just get him neutered.

  1. We felt Zeuterin was more humane.
  2. Zeuterin does not eliminate testosterone production. It lowers it by 50 to 60%. I have seen first-hand what can happen to humans when they can no longer produce their own hormones.
  3. Research is starting to reveal that castration is not always better for dogs' health or behavior. In fact, the professor who Zeutered Loki just sent me a study showing that castration in Loki's breed did not improve behavior or overall health.
  4. Because of what I do, I will always opt for the least invasive, most natural option, be it for human or pet.

While certainly not for everyone, Zeuterin will be an incredible option for shelters. Zeuterin costs $15 as opposed to $200 on average for castration.

If anyone is interested in learning more about Zeuterin, they can go to Ark Science's website.

Having the Right Supplement Plan is Crucial

Did you know that you need to have your dietary supplement regimen evaluated frequently? Like with medication, as your body changes, so do your nutrient needs. Research is always evolving and new supplements seem to come to market on a daily basis.

Our philosophy has always been to tailor supplements to your individual needs. You wouldn't go to the store to change your prescriptions. So why do it for supplements? Just as a doctor and pharmacist are experts with medication, our expertise is in finding the safest, most effective, and least reactive supplements for you.

You need an evaluation if...

  • You have not had your supplements evaluated within the last 12 to 18 months.
  • You have made changes to your supplement regimen. Many clients who self-prescribe start to feel worse and wonder why. Often, the supplements they switched to have one or more ingredients that they do not tolerate, or are simply overdosing on nutrients.
  • Your health status has changed, either for worse or for better.
  • You listened to Dr. Oz and went out to buy his top 5 weight management supplements. While partially tongue-in-cheek, many people do this. Dr. Oz is not making recommendations for your individual needs and there can be serious consequences from following one-size-fits-all advice like this.

Call at 847-498-3422 or email at for an evaluation.
