Too Much, Too Little Calcium Can Be Deadly.

Bonnie and Steve: We have been vociferously getting the word out about calcium. Excuse us if you have read it before, but it is worth repeating until the message hits home. The problem is that with increasing fervor, physicians are taking an "all or nothing" approach to calcium. This is detrimental because, too much or too little calcium can be equally as dangerous.

A soon-to-be published British Medical Journal study found that high intakes of calcium from both food and supplements is associated with an increased risk of all-cause mortality and death from heart disease in women. The research findings suggest that subjects with high intakes are associated with twice the risk of death from heart disease when compared to those with lower intakes.


What is High and Low Intake?   

The researchers deemed women with high calcium intakes as greater than 1400 mg per day, and women with lower intakes between 600 mg and 999 mg per day. 


Just as important was the finding that mortality rates were also higher among women with an intake below 600 mg per day. 


The researchers tried to explain the mechanism behind their finding by suggesting that diets very low or very high in calcium can override normal homeostatic control causing changes in blood levels of calcium.

Most public health organizations, such as The Institute of Medicine, recommend way too much calcium. For example, the IOM suggests women over 50 should obtain 1,200 milligrams of calcium daily, but also advises a Tolerable Upper Intake Level (UL) of 2,000 mg daily from all sources, including food and supplements.


Hopefully, with mounting research showing too much is as bad as too little, public health decision makers will rework their recommendations. These should include the key to optimally absorbing calcium: a quality source, vitamin D3, and a 1:1 ratio of calcium:magnesium.

Why No Calcium Is Not the Answer.
Aside from the the obvious association with bone health, scientists studying the cellular processes underlying the body's response to healing have revealed how a flash of calcium is the very first step in repairing damaged tissue. The findings, were recently published in Current Biology.

Until recently, very little was known about how damaged tissue activates and attracts the first white blood cells to the wound -- the first stage in the healing process. The very first trigger in this process is a flash of calcium which spreads like a wave back from the wound edge through gap junctions that connect all the cells. Because
 calcium represents the immediate inflammatory signal, having adequate calcium stores is crucial for wound healing.
