NCI Well Connect Mid-Week Brief
April 25, 2018
Dear Steve,

DID YOU KNOW that in a new Journal of Neuroimaging study, Harvard researchers found biochemical mechanisms by which Tai Chi, a mind-body exercise, provides both physical and psychological benefits?

Measuring brain and muscle chemistry using MRI machines, tests in older adults enrolled in a 12-week Tai Chi program revealed significant increases in a marker of neuronal health in the brain and significantly improved recovery rates of a metabolite involved in energy production in leg muscles.

Have a happy, healthy day! Steve and Bonnie

Avocado's Effect on Cholesterol
Bonnie and Steve: Avocado is a superfood. You know it. We know it. But does everyone know it? Believe it or not, there are still different factions in public health that see avocado as a foe, not friend.

If any health professional you see is still under the impression that avocados have an adverse effect on the heart via higher lipid levels, let the following arm you with yet more evidence to the contrary.

In a huge study from this month's issue of American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, avocado intake resulted in no difference in serum total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, and triglyceride concentrations. However, it did increase serum HDL-cholesterol concentrations, which is what we want. HDL serves as a beneficial counterbalance to LDL-cholesterol.

Like any other food, we don't want to overdo it. But certainly, a quarter or half of an avocado five days a week should be seen as a potent accelerant to any healthy lifestyle.

And did you know that avocado is a large berry, which makes it a fruit!
