NCI Well Connect
July 9, 2018
Dear Steve,

DID YOU KNOW that a newly developed dietary inflammatory index was recently created to evaluate the inflammatory potential of diets? Analysis from the March issue of American Journal of Clinical Nutrition indicated that diets with a higher dietary inflammatory index is significantly correlated with cancer risk. They now suggest using this index for future, wide ranging analysis in large population groups.

Have a happy, healthy day! Steve and Bonnie

Making Sense of Coffee
Bonnie and Steve: Unless you were incommunicado for few weeks, you read or heard about the JAMA study lauding coffee's ability to reduce mortality, at amounts up to eight cups per day or more, leaded or unleaded, and even for slow caffeine metabolizers!

We have always been a proponent of coffee in its pristine form, but like anything else, it is not ideal for everyone. We've received numerous emails from clients asking if they they should start drinking coffee again.

For many of you who have not been drinking coffee, it is because you have, or have had in the past, an acid or salicylate problem. Why would you want to revisit that by starting to drink coffee again? Other people are very slow metabolizers of caffeine and simply do not like the way they feel when drinking it.

Here's the other thing. Are you willing to drink coffee black with no sweetener? Most are not because black coffee is bitter. This is the only true way to get the mortality reducing benefits from coffee.

We don't mean to burst your bubble. We just want to remind you that we're not one-size-fits-all. Like turmeric, aspirin, and many other natural substances, coffee is wonderful for some, but not all.
