NCI Well Connect
August 13, 2018
Dear Steve,

DID YOU KNOW that a recent study Nutrients examined the protective role of the antioxidant supplement astaxanthin for ultra-violet (UV)-induced skin deterioration in healthy people? In subjects exposed to the same amount of UV light, those taking 4 mg. of astaxanthin had a reduced loss of skin moisture in the irradiated area compared with placebo. Skin conditions for "improvement of rough skin" and "texture" in non-irradiated areas were significantly improved by astaxanthin as well. Thus, the study purports that astaxanthin seems protective against UV-induced skin deterioration and helps maintain healthy skin in healthy people.

Have a happy, healthy day! Steve and Bonnie

Grass-Fed Beef: Read the Fine Print
Bonnie and Steve: Since the country of origin labeling law was repealed a few years ago, grass-fed beef has suffered the consequences, with labeling that misleads consumers. Almost 50% of grass-fed beef labeled as "Product of USA" actually comes from other countries. Legally, US meat packers can do this because as long as the meat is finished in the US, they can label it as such.

We warned that this would happen once the country of origin labeling law was repealed. This piece in New Food Economy says it all.

If you would like to voice your opinion for truthfully labeling grass-fed beef, please comment the government here.

In the meantime, if you want grass-fed beef that is fully American, look at the fine print on the label. If you see "Product of USA, Australia, and Uruguay," as labeled above, it is not fully American beef.

The image at the beginning of our newsletter is an example of what the label should look like for it to be 100% made in the USA.

Just because the meat comes from other countries does not mean it is not grass-fed. Australia's standards are very high as are Uruguay's. However, there is not true oversight.

The best thing you can do is find a local purveyor that you can track all the way back to the local farm. If not possible, just read your labels.
