NCI Well Connect Mid-Week Brief
September 12, 2018
Dear Steve,

DID YOU KNOW that according to a study in the August issue of Journal of the American College of Nutrition, regular consumption of vitamin C-rich fruits and green leafy vegetable intake are imperative for improvement of iron status among adolescent girls?

Cardiovascular Research Hepagen is finally back in stock!

NutriBiotic Dental Gel is on back order until the end of September. While it is out, we recommend: Magic Mud Charcoal Toothpaste (prepare for charcoal residue on the sink though) and Tom's of Maine Fluoride-Free Toothpaste Gel.

UP4 Daily has been discontinued. For an apples to apples replacement, we suggest Klaire Labs Probiotic Complex.

Have a happy, healthy day! Steve and Bonnie
Our Take: Probiotics Are Useless Study
Bonnie and Steve: Hopefully, you've read enough of our newsletters to know that when you see a headline such as "Probiotics labeled quite useless," you know to question it first. Headlines are simply click bait.

While two new studies from Cell are compelling, they do not show that probiotics are useless. However, the studies do show that if you are not taking probiotic strains that are individualized, or have been well researched, they can be useless for some.

The authors state: "Collectively, empiric probiotics supplementation may be limited in universally and persistently impacting the gut mucosa, meriting development of new personalized probiotic approaches."

This is why you shouldn't just go and pick up a probiotic, especially one with many strains.

Summary of the findings:
  • The studies were tiny (mice, and 25 and 21 human subjects respectively). This is hardly a large sample size. To give you an idea, our recent clinical trials were small, and we had a sample size of over 400 subjects.
  • One study found that some people reject probiotic colonization with certain strains and others accept them with no problem. The researchers do not postulate why this happens, but we do. Consumption of probiotics does not mean that they are not helpful if colonization does not occur. The probiotics can still be efficacious but are being used up before being able to colonize. This is why you take probiotics on a daily basis.
  • The other study used an 11 strain probiotic or fecal transplant in mouse and human subjects after taking an antibiotic. They found that some subjects taking the probiotic responded much slower to recolonization than subjects who got the fecal transplant. This should not be news to anyone. The fecal transplant works almost immediately. Probiotics take longer.
  • In the antibiotic study, they do not use saccharomyces boulardii, which is not technically a probiotic. S. boulardii is the most effective substance to protect the gut and maintain beneficial colonization as much as possible while on the antibiotic.
  • Myriad studies have shown a beneficial effect for probiotics in protecting from antibiotic damage, but most of this research has been done with one or two strains maximum. This is another reason why we are against taking probiotics with many strains, such as the 11 strain one used in the Cell study.
  • The probiotic complex used in the study does not have any clinical studies associated with it.
Takeaway: Individualization and using well-researched strains is always best when it comes to probiotics.
Gerolsteiner Alternative
Bonnie and Steve: We know that you love Gerolsteiner sparkling water. All of our family and staff love it too! However, there are some that do not care for Gerolsteiner, or find it cumbersome to purchase glass bottles.

We are delighted that Pure Encapsulations has launched Mineral2O, which is basically Gerolsteiner in "powder" form. Just add a tiny scoop to 8 oz. of water and that's it!

Here are some of the reasons why Mineral2O is so ideal:
  • It's portable. Much easier to bring with on vacations or to the gym. You can put a scoop into your water bottle and have an instant electrolyte water/mineral supplement.
  • The downside of a reverse osmosis filter is it removes all minerals. Also, if you live in a location with soft water, there are few minerals. Mineral2O can replace many of these for you.
  • Provides essential electrolytes, but is very low in sodium. We get so much more sodium in our diets than all other electrolytes. You can add sea salt to your water if you need more sodium.
  • Perfect for athletes and those who exercise vigorously for before and after workouts/athletic events.
  • Better tolerated for those with absorption issues or chronic diarrhea.
  • When you have stomach flu or an intestinal virus that causes acute diarrhea, Mineral2O with a well tolerated sugar, such as maple syrup, could be awonderful alternative to the dehydration formulas that are loaded with corn and preservatives.
  • You could reduce your calcium and magnesium supplement intake. Consult with your health professional before doing so.
  • It's alkalizing. Along with calcium, magnesium, and chloride, Mineral2O contains 72 trace minerals, most of which are alkalizing.
