NCI Well Connect
September 17, 2018
Dear Steve,

DID YOU KNOW that nearly 20 percent of marijuana products in California have failed tests for potency and purity since the state started requiring the checks on July 1? The testing has been especially tough on cannabis-infused cookies, candies and tinctures: About one-third have been blocked from store shelves.

In much smaller numbers, testing companies licensed by the state are finding unacceptable levels of pesticides, solvents and bacteria, including E. coli and salmonella, according to data provided to The Associated Press by the state Bureau of Cannabis Control.

It's still the Wild West out there!

Have a happy, healthy day! Steve and Bonnie

So-Called "Root of All Inflammation"
Bonnie and Steve: We have received numerous inquiries about a book called The Plant Paradox, written by Dr. Steven Gundry, who claims that the root of inflammation is caused by lectins, a type of protein found in all plant foods and dairy.

Dr. Gundry has lectin-busting supplements and companion products that produce "miracles". We've been down this road before with crazy diets such as this.

Lectins are not going to be the next gluten-free craze. Here's why.

Certain lectins possess an inherent toxicity thought to have evolved as a natural deterrent to protect plants and animals from being eaten. It appears to be working, because several animal species have been shown to experience reduced intestinal absorption and resulting morbidity after ingesting lectins. Essentially, lectin toxicity mirrors the effect of food poisoning, and serves as an evolutionary caution sign.

Guess what commonly consumed plant by humans contains the highest concentration of lectin...wheat!

This is in no way true of all lectins, whose range is considerable. Most lectins are inactive with no biological activity, whereas others are thought to have health benefits. Putting them all under one umbrella is basically meaningless.

Like gluten, if you consume certain lectins and do not have the enzymes to properly digest them, they can pass through the digestive tract undisturbed, which has been linked to nutrient deficiencies, disrupted digestion, and severe intestinal damage. There are also proposed risks if lectins enter the body's circulation.

The global populations with the longest, healthiest lifespans have diets rich in lectins, whereas the Standard American Diet does not, except for wheat, which is mindbogglingly high in lectins.

The other thing Dr. Gundry does not mention is that lectin content, very high in raw beans, for instance, is reduced to almost zero when cooked.

This is why evaluating the needs of each individual is key. For someone with major absorption issues, a diet loaded with grains and beans would not be good for them until they are able to heal. When they are healed, they should be able to tolerate a certain amount of lectin without a problem.

The only thing Dr. Gundry and we can agree upon is that there is no reason to consistently consume foods containing American grown wheat. It is high in gluten, lectins, phytate, and agglutinin, antinutrients that can wreak havoc on the gut after consistent bombardment, especially in those who are most susceptible.
