NCI Well Connect Mid-Week Brief
September 19, 2018
Dear Steve,

DID YOU KNOW that a study in last week's New England Journal of Medicineconcluded, "Aspirin use in healthy elderly persons did not prolong disability-free survival over a period of 5 years but led to a higher rate of major hemorrhage than placebo."

This is vindication for many years of warning clients and their physicians about the dangers outweighing benefits for long-term, low-dose aspirin prophylaxis.

Cardiovascular Research Hepagen is finally back in stock!

NutriBiotic Dental Gel is on back order until the end of September. While it is out, we recommend: Magic Mud Charcoal Toothpaste (prepare for charcoal residue on the sink though) and Tom's of Maine Fluoride-Free Toothpaste Gel.

UP4 Daily has been discontinued. For an apples to apples replacement, we suggest Klaire Labs Probiotic Complex.

Have a happy, healthy New Year! Steve and Bonnie
Major Study Nobody's Talking About
Bonnie and Steve: A study from the April issue of PLoS One reported something very impressive: a decade after the end of a randomized clinical trial, the benefits of dietary supplementation not only persisted, but seemed to be getting bigger. So why are we not talking about this more?

Scientists studied healthy participants consuming either placebo or supplements of CoQ10 (200 mg/day) plus selenium (200 micrograms/day) for four years. After an average of 12 years of study after the end of the intervention, data indicated that the supplementation group had a 40% lower cardiovascular (CV) mortality risk than people in the placebo group.

There wasn't even a press release on the study. I can understand the lack of media attention, but no industry chatter about this either? For spending a good amount of time responding to negativity, this is precisely the kind of study we should be crowing about!

It should also be stressed that these were well-characterized supplements, the participants were healthy seniors, we have over a decade of data on them, and the statistics show the effects were not marginal - they were the kind of results that many researchers can only dream about.

So why such long lasting effects? Researchers postulate that an epigenetic effect could be at play, or "altering our genetic software". Regulation of oxidative stress, inflammation, and mitochondrial function all play major roles in disease progression or prevention, depending on what messages are being delivered to our genes.

Seems like a better alternative to aspirin, no?
Gerolsteiner Alternative
Bonnie and Steve: We know that you love Gerolsteiner sparkling water. All of our family and staff love it too! However, there are some that do not care for Gerolsteiner, or find it cumbersome to purchase glass bottles.

We are delighted that Pure Encapsulations has launched Mineral2O, which is basically Gerolsteiner in "powder" form. Just add a tiny scoop to 8 oz. of water and that's it!

Here are some of the reasons why Mineral2O is so ideal:
  • It's portable. Much easier to bring with on vacations or to the gym. You can put a scoop into your water bottle and have an instant electrolyte water/mineral supplement.
  • The downside of a reverse osmosis filter is it removes all minerals. Also, if you live in a location with soft water, there are few minerals. Mineral2O can replace many of these for you.
  • Provides essential electrolytes, but is very low in sodium. We get so much more sodium in our diets than all other electrolytes. You can add sea salt to your water if you need more sodium.
  • Perfect for athletes and those who exercise vigorously for before and after workouts/athletic events.
  • Better tolerated for those with absorption issues or chronic diarrhea.
  • When you have stomach flu or an intestinal virus that causes acute diarrhea, Mineral2O with a well tolerated sugar, such as maple syrup, could be awonderful alternative to the dehydration formulas that are loaded with corn and preservatives.
  • You could reduce your calcium and magnesium supplement intake. Consult with your health professional before doing so.
  • It's alkalizing. Along with calcium, magnesium, and chloride, Mineral2O contains 72 trace minerals, most of which are alkalizing.

Acid Alkaline Theory

Steve: The acid alkaline theory is based upon the pH scale for measurement for acidity and alkalinity in food. One is the most acidic whereas 10 is the most alkaline.....
