ASK BONNIE for August 2000

Question #1:

Lately, the joints in a couple of my fingers hurt alot. I talked to a few people, and they thought it might be the start of arthritis? My Mom had arthritis in her hands, so I thought it's probably a good possibility I might have it or get it. Does this sound right to you? Is this something vitamins can help?

Answer #1

Arthritis is autoimmune. If you are diagnosed with it, your physician will recommend powerful medications that may have many side effects. Avoiding high acid, allergenic foods can help keep the pain to a minimum. For small areas, a topical cream with glucosamine may help. I also suggest shark cartilage, a supplement containing chondroitin (and can also double as a calcium supplement). More magnesium may also assist with the stiffness and acid balance. If the arthritis gets worse, even after trying these suggestions, SAM-e is a supplement that is being heavily researched as useful for arthritis, but it is also expensive.

Question #2:

I have hypothyroidism and I would be interested in knowing what kind of diet would be best for me.

Answer #2:

This condition depends on many factors, so should be carefully watched by an endocrinologist. Foods that help suppress thyroid function so should be eaten more often are broccoli, brussel sprouts, cauliflower, cabbage, kale, mustard greens, peaches, pears, soybeans, and spinach. Foods to avoid include stimulants, coffee, tea, cigarettes, and soft drinks. Best avoided also are most dairy products, aspartame, MSG (monosodium glutamate), and sugar.
