ASK
BONNIE for August 2001
Question #1:
I just want to know how to calculate the calorie percentages of carbohydrates,
fats, and proteins. Is this already done on the food labels?
Answer #1:
The calories given on all food labels are for one serving. It is difficult to calculate calories for carbs, and protein unless you take % of total calories. Fat calories are often listed. For instance, if a 31/2 cup serving of microwave popcorn has 170 total calories and 5% of these come from carb, 28.5 calories come from carb.
Question #2:
I've always been underweight, but I have exercised for the last 8 months regularly and lean towards consuming more carbs than protein. Could my supplement intake or the food that doesn't comply with my blood type prevent me from gaining weight?
Answer #2:
Poor absorption and too many carbs with too little healthy fats and protein are the primary causes of poor weight gain. The blood type is merely an indicator of poorly absorbed, allergenic foods to avoid, and foods needed to thrive. Blood Type "O", for instance, thrives on lean animal protein and digests gluten (wheat, rye, oats, etc.), corn, and cow's milk products poorly. Blood Type "A" does not tolerate heavy red meat, lactose, and whole wheat well but tends to do well with most grains and beans. Blood Type "B" cannot digest corn products. Blood Type "AB" digests most foods well. Of course, there are individual differences. No one does well with excess sugar.
Have a happy, healthy day.
