ASK BONNIE for December 2001

Question:

What can help increase milk supply in a nursing mother?

Answer:

Less stress, sufficient fluid, sufficient calories (especially from proteins and healthy fats), and the herbs Fenugreek, fennel, and raspberry leaf may help (if tolerated). More nursing increases milk; a desire of the infant for more nursing can increase with garlic. Herbs to avoid while nursing are black walnut, sage, and yarrow. Also, too much fluid can be counterproductive. eight to ten glasses of filtered water is ideal. No soft drinks or Nutrasweet. Over twelve glasses of water can slow milk production.

Have a happy, healthy day.
