Question #1:

Bonnie, I always have hard time keeping the weight off in the winter. Any helpful suggestions?

Answer #1:

Winter tends to make us more sedentary. Also, the holidays, Super Bowl parties, etc. encourage overeating. Besides the obvious (exercise, restful sleep, reduce sugar intake, and balanced eating, i.e., never eating a carb alone), here are some more detailed tips:

1. Keep only safe foods in the house. Many of you who have seen me for counseling know that "safe" has different meanings for different people. For some, it could mean removing all salicylate foods from the house. For another person with yeast or wheat issues, removing all bread from your house is a big plus. Having only safe foods around when you are home will go a long way to keep that winter weight at bay.

2. Eat at least three balanced meals with one protein snack daily. Breakfast is the most important because it promotes biochemical harmony and satiety throughout the day. Try to avoid grazing throughout the day because the calories can really pile up.

3. Eat your meals slowly without distractions. This will fend off your tendency to overeat. Don't eat in front of the television or while you're on the phone with a client. It usually takes twenty minutes for you to start feeling full, so chew slowly, put your fork down between bites, and use the gift of gab if with family, friends, or coworkers.

4. If you tend to use food as emotional comfort, discover another outlet to channel your emotions. Some examples might be deep breathing, a quick walk, a few jumping jacks, stopping to put things in perspective and "not sweat the small stuff," or keeping a food diary (and recording your feelings when overindulging) should keep you more focused on what you need to change.

5. Utilize complementary therapies to maintain ideal weight or promote safe, mild weight-loss. Some examples would be taking your supplements to assure ideal nutrient capacity, chiropractic to encourage proper digestion, acupuncture to maintain free flowing energy pathways and reduce inflammation, far infrared sauna therapy for detoxification and pain reduction, meditation/yoga to foster mental harmony, and striving for optimal quality of life (i.e. volunteering, how you treat others, commitment to family and friends). All of the following make you feel good. When you feel good, it is easier to maintain or lose weight!
