ASK BONNIE for June 2005

Question #1:

You wrote a column suggesting that avocados are very healthy and are not fattening as I thought. Is this correct or just not as bad as we thought. Are they all good so to speak?

Answer #1:

Avocados are fabulous!

1) A great source of magnesium and potassium

2) Liver detoxifier

3) Heart healthy - raise good HDL cholesterol

4) Great blood sugar regulator

Not only are they not fattening, they can help you actually lose weight!

Question #2:

I was curious if you had heard of the nutritional findings of Dr. Weston Price...He was a dentist who studied several cultures around the world with the highest longevity rates and found some common themes running through the very different people.  1. Their diets were devoid of processed and refined foods (obvious) and 2. their diets were nearly 10X as high in fat soluble vitamins A & D.  Because of his findings, he advocated raw butter and cod liver oil as "miracle" foods for their high
vitamin content, as well as, fresh eggs, raw dairy, organ meats, soaked/sprouted/or fermented grains, legumes, and nuts (because of their enzyme inhibitors) and lacto-fermented fruits and vegetables.

His studies were fascinating and curious what your thoughts were.

Answer #2:

Dr Weston is not an expert on diets relating to genetics and evolution; nor is he familiar with food safety issues. However, some of his comments are sound.

Obviously, no processed or refined foods is great for everyone.

Vitamins A&D naturally occurring in contaminant-free Cod Liver Oil are fabulous. I recommend it often.

Eggs and dairy are very allergenic today. Dairy is not compatible for most of the world's population. Organ meats tend to be too toxic today but were a major source of nutrients 10,000 years ago. Raw milk, even if compatible, is not safe in most cases today due to contamination.

Soaked, sprouted fermented grains, legumes, and nuts are certainly more compatible and digestible for all humans.

Compared to the new Food Pyramid, however, people would be a lot healthier with Price's recommendations if food safety and toxicity were not an issue.

Have a happy, healthy day.
