ASK
BONNIE for March 2002
Question #1:
I have IBS and wish to know whether I can take calcium citrate, and if so, what
dosage?
Answer #1:
Calcium citrate would not be a wise choice for IBS. It is very nasty to the g.i.
tract because it is not well absorbed and constipating.
Your best choice for potentially ameliorating IBS symptoms is to balance your
gut flora through Probiotics. Lactobacillus Acidophilus, Bifidum, among others
will infuse healthy flora into your g.i. tract and will help balance the
often-dominating bad flora that is usually associated with IBS.
Not all Probiotics are created equal. When looking for the right product, try to
make sure the Probiotic is of the DDS-1 or NCFM strain, which are
well-researched for effectiveness.
Question #2:
During PMS week, I find my body requires more food, especially those high in fat
like chocolate. What do recommend eating during this time of the month?
Answer #2:
250-400mg of Magnesium, preferably in the glycinate form, should be taken to counteract the hormonal change. Chocolate is the highest magnesium food. Healthy fats such as nuts/seeds and avocado will also help.
Have a happy, healthy day.
