Question #1:
My son was just diagnosed having a double ear infections. They 'obviously' gave me antibiotics (penicillin) to give to him. This would be his first antibiotic and he is 10 1/2 months old. I have started to give him the antibiotics, but plan on giving him acidophilus as well. I have heard you are not suppose to give the acidophilus around the same time you give the antibiotic. Is that true?
Answer #1:
Most ear infections are self-limiting, and antibiotics are not necessary. In
fact, current
research shows that children who take antibiotics get ear infections more
frequently. Once you begin the antibiotics, however, you have to finish the full
course. A probiotic taken two hours away from the antibiotic and sacchromyces
boulardii taken with the antibiotic are necessary. One half tablespoon, taken
2-3 times daily, of Metagenics Zinc Tally (zinc sulfate solution) will also help
his immune system.
We also use Nutribiotic Ear Drops and give Nutribiotic liquid concentrate orally
for ear infections (the concentrate is not to be taken if on an antibiotic
however). We recommend completely avoiding wheat and dairy products for healing.
They are the two most common causes of recurrent ear infections. So if your
child gets them consistently, you need to address this probability.
