ASK
BONNIE for September 2002
Question #1:
Could you talk about your clinical experience linking Aspartame and Multiple
Sclerosis?
Answer #1:
I have actually counseled two individuals with supposed multiple sclerosis who, after discontinuing the use of aspartame and monosodium glutamate (MSG), reversed their symptoms.
I also counseled a surgeon who lost his memory from repeated ingestion of 8-10 Diet soft drinks (without food) daily. Fortunately, he was able to restore his memory after discontinuing the product and eating three balanced meals daily.
Aspartame and MSG block the absorption of vitamin B6 and the mineral magnesium. These two nutrients are extremely important for neurotransmission and optimum brain function. Magnesium also regulates acid balance, so can help reverse metabolic acidosis if the consumption of MSG and aspartame are stopped completely. The best resource on the subject is a block written by a neurosurgeon, Russell Blaylock, M.D. The book is entitled Excitotoxins: The Taste That Kills.
Question #2:
I seem to have had an allergic reaction to wine - including a swollen tongue and
ulcers in my mouth. The interesting thing is that it seems to be specific
brands, not specific types - does that make any sense??
Answer #2:
Yes, it makes sense. Some countries use far less sulfiting agents then others (for instance, the United States uses a lot; Italy, New Zealand and Australia very little). Also, the United States clarifies with corn mash and most of their wines contain a lot of pesticides.
Finally, all wines are high in salicylic acid. Some have a worse acid count than others. Reds have more tannins and salicylic acid than whites; but some reds have more than others. I have a feeling that your problem is probably the sulfite issue. Italian Chianti, New Zealand, or Australian Shiraz. Then try any decent American dry red wine (cabernet, Merlot, etc.). If you feel worse with the American variety, the problem is clearly sulfiting agents.
Have a happy, healthy day.
