ASK
BONNIE for September 2001
Question #1:
Hi Bonnie, I always wonder if I get enough protein and calcium. I eat homemade
miso soup every day with lots of vegetables at lunchtime with a slice of turkey
or cheese. Then a protein (like chicken or eggs or beans) at dinner. I'm post
menopausal and take Fosamax (weekly) and 1250mg of calcium citrate every day.
I'm pretty thin but have loads of energy...any suggestions?
Answer #1:
You do not appear to be getting enough protein. Protein is very important for
bone health. See my book for further details. If you are not taking at least
500mg of magnesium and 400IU of vitamin D, you won't have all of the building
blocks of bone. If you're willing to eat fish, especially fatty fish such as
salmon, sardines, halibut, or mackerel, this will give you other essential
proteins for bone health.
Question #2:
My eleven year-old daughter has recently been diagnosed with Irritable Bowel
Syndrome. She is also milk-intolerant. She is currently taking pepsin and
hydrochloric acid with meals and it seems to be helping, but not 100%. My other
daughter has migraines. What has your success been with IBS?
Answer #2:
Hopefully she is avoiding dairy products 100%. IBS and most migraines are
usually caused by food sensitivity - my specialty. The pepsin and HCL won't
correct her problem if she is still eating foods to which she is sensitive. We
detect food sensitivity through ELISA or RAST blood tests, or an elimination
diet for two weeks.
Have a happy, healthy day.
