ASK BONNIE for February 2001
Question #1:
Bonnie, I am a 29 year old and the mother of a 6 year old. I have been thin all my life at
5'8 and 125 pounds with a small frame. I actually look much thinner than I am. I know most
women would love to be my size, but I feel weak and unatttractive. My question is, what is
the fastest and safest way to add 15-20 pounds to my weight. I want to look more shapely
and feel better about myself.
Answer #1:
I would need to know more about your food intake, digestion, and absorption. You may not
be getting enough fat/protein calories and eating too much malabsorbed starch (such as
whole grain and wheat). The first thing I would try is more fat (add 30-40 grams daily)
from avocado (guacamole), nuts/seeds, humus (full fat variety), non-hydrogenated margarine
(such a Spectrum) and other energy producing heart healthy fats.
Also, cut back on grains while adding more fruits and veggies. If this does not produce
the desired result, I would need to do a nutritional consult.
Question #2:
Bonnie, what dietary recommendations would make for someone just diagnosed with psoriatic
arthritis?
Answer #2:
This is not a simple answer. I would need to see test results for sytemic yeast,
allergies, food sensitivities, CBC, Chem Screen, and Urinalysis before making an
evaluation. There is definitely a relationship with psoriasis, arthritis, and psoriatic
arthritis to allergies, food sensitivities, and/or a yeast overgrowth. Thus, it is
essential that these avenues be explored.
Have a happy, healthy day.
