ASK BONNIE for February 2005
Question #1:
I am 24 years old and the past 2 months I've been following a low-carbo diet in order to lose weight. I've been reading many articles about the effect of the low-carb diets to the human organism. There was one article saying that the low-carb diets are one of the main reasons for causing osteoporosis. I would like to know if it is true. Also, if is is related someway, I want to be informed what shall I consume such as milk or cheese on daily basis in order to avoid osteoporosis.
Answer #1:
As far as low-carb diets causing osteoporosis...completely not true. Osteoporosis was just as prevalent before the low-carb craze. I am not an advocate of low-carb diets. I recommend a moderate low-glycemic carbohydrate diet from plenty of fruits and vegetables.
As far as consuming milk and cheese on a daily basis in order to avoid osteoporosis...cow’s milk is the most common
food allergen in the United States.
At least 2/3 of the world’s population is lactose intolerant (unable to digest the sugar in milk).
The countries’ consuming the most milk products have the highest rate of hip fractures due to osteoporosis (Finland and the U.S.) and have a high
rate of heart disease due to their high calcium to low magnesium intake (see enclosed).
On the other hand, Okinawa, according to the World Health Organization, has the healthiest native diet and people in the world. Only 2% of their diet
comes from dairy products. They have much less heart disease, cancer, and osteoporosis than do U.S. citizens. Too little protein can also cause
osteoporosis.
Balancing calcium (in viable, well-absorbed food sources or dietary supplements) with magnesium and vitamin D, and keeping systemic acid levels low
will do the most to prevent osteoporosis. The main reason for osteoporosis in this country is excess acid! Besides diet, what produces the most
acid... STRESS!
Have a happy, healthy day.
