ASK BONNIE for July 2000

Question #1:

What Food has a good amount of Serotonin in it that I can eat to help raise my levels?

Answer #1

Foods do not contain serotonin. A wide variety of nutrients, especially B-6 and Magnesium, can balance Serotonin. Foods that are often craved because they provide "feel good" Serotonin balance are potatoes and chocolate. Many foods and food additives destroy B-6 and Magnesium, thus disturbing Serotonin balance (i.e. food allergens, food dyes, MSG [monosodium glutamate], and aspartame).

Question #2:

No matter if I increase my water intake, my urine stays very, very yellow! Is it something I should be concerned about?

Answer #2:

It's something to be happy about if you're taking B-Vitamins and or Vitamin C supplements. That's the color it should be. If you are not taking vitamin/mineral supplements, this should be discussed with your physician.

Question #3:

Glucosamine is being recommended by many friends for arthritis. Is it a supplement you could recommend?

Answer #3:

I would have to know the situation first: food sensitivities, acid levels, type of arthritis, etc. I often recommend Benefin, a natural blend of glucosamine and chondroitin from FDA approved, contaminant-free shark cartilage. The added benefit is that Benefin is low acid and contains a decent amount of calcium.
