ASK BONNIE for March 2005
Question #1:
My son is now three years old. He became lactose intolerant when he was 1 year old and is now on soy formula and we are advised not to give him egg or wheat products. Is there anything else you would advise?
Answer #1:
Why are you giving your three year-old a soy formula? He should not need a formula at age 3 unless he is extremely underweight. Soymilk (my favorite brand is enriched Imagine Soy Dream), rice milk (enriched Rice Dream), or Pacific Foods Almond or Hazelnut Milk are good substitutes for cow's milk.
If your son is merely lactose intolerant (and not truly milk-allergic), he should be able to tolerate some cheese (organic mozzarella string cheese is great) and yogurt (I like the Stonyfield Whole Milk "Yo Baby" brand). If he cannot tolerate these low lactose dairy foods, he may have a dairy allergy. Without the protein, eggs, cheese, and yogurt, he may not be getting enough protein-rich foods. I would make sure that he gets organic turkey, chicken, fish (especially salmon), and/or lean red meat (if all are tolerated). At each meal to make sure he is getting enough protein and fat (macronutrients), and vitamins/minerals (micronutrients).
Question #2:
Have you found any foods to help or aggravate cerebral arteritis?
Answer #2:
This is not an easy answer. There are foods that both help and aggravate the condition. Of course, foods containing the following may aggravate the condition:
-Sugar
-Excess grain carbohydrates
-Saturated fat
-Trans fats
-Malabsorbed calcium from dairy or supplement
Foods/nutrients that may help the condition:
-Copious vegetables and some fruits
-Wild caught fatty fish (i.e. salmon) and/or high quality fish oil
-Pulverized flaxseed
-Monounsaturated and some polyunsaturated oils
-Avocado
-Lean, hormone-free, antibiotic-free natural animal protein
-Magnesium-rich foods or supplement
-Co-EnzymeQ10
-B-vitamins with extra folate
All of these dietary changes would need to be implemented in conjunction with your licensed health professional. This is as far as I can go without having you make an appt so I can assess the "whole picture."
Have a happy, healthy day.
