ASK BONNIE for November 1999
Question:
My husband (66 years) has had chronic constipation all his life. What can be done to
correct this?
Answer:
The major cause of constipation is a consistent intake of imcompatible food. For example,
cow's milk is the number one cause of constipation among children. Many individuals are
gluten-intolerant or cannot break down the heavy fiber in most grains, especially wheat,
rye, and corn. Try eating only "Best Choice" foods for your genetic
predisposition (knowing your blood type will help).
If this change is not effective enough, add more healthy fats (i.e., nut butters and, olive and canola oils), more fruit and vegetable fiber (i.e., berries, cruciferous vegetables, celery), and fruits with a laxative effect (i.e., prunes and other dried fruits). If there still is a a problem, I recommend digestive enzymes tailored to your individual needs. I discuss enzymes in the fall issue of our Natural Living Newsletter.
