ASK BONNIE for October 2000

Question:

The cold and flu season is upon us and I want your recommendations of some natural remedies.

Answer

Try my AACC (Alternative Anti-Cold/Flu Cocktail). For this time of year, you need to keep your immune system strong, have a natural anti-microbial/viral, and keep the GI tract balanced.

Grapefruit Seed Extract (GSE) -
This anti-microbial may be a natural, safe, and effective source in preventing debilitating colds and flus. For daily maintenance, one tablet (approximately 125mg.) or 4-6 drops in water should be sufficient. If you feel something coming on, double your dosage and spread it out during the day. If you have a cold or the flu, you can take up to 6 tablets or 12-18 drops in water and spread it throughout the day. Click here for more information about the many uses of GSE.

Zinc Sulfate Solution -
Zinc is essential for keeping the immune system strong, which is why a daily dose of Zinc Sulfate Solution (2.3 mg) may aid in preventing colds and flus. It is also a wonderful test to see if you are zinc deficient Swish around in your mouth for 10-15 seconds and then swallow. If it tastes like water, you are zinc deficient. If a pronounced chalky or metallic taste, your zinc level is fine.

For daily maintenance, one dose should be sufficient. If you feel something coming on, double your dosage and spread it out during the day. If you have a cold or the flu, you can take up to 3 doses and spread it throughout the day.

Esberitox - This is a patented European formula made exclusively by Phyto Pharmica. We like this Echinacea complex because of its positive clinical research. It is also a chewable tablet which tastes good. This is the ideal supplement to take when you feel something coming on and/or throughout your cold/flu. It will stimulate your immune system and hopefully lessen the amount of time you are sick. We only suggest being on this product for two weeks at a time. If dairy allergic, you may want to avoid because it does contain a minute amount of lactose. If Blood Type O, you may want to leave this out of your AACC because Echinacea is not believed to be compatible.

Probiotics/Microflora -
It is well documented that most sickness begins in the GI tract. It is also believed that when the microflora within your GI tract is imbalanced, unhealthy bacteria and viruses feast. Probiotics/Microflora are healthy bacteria that aid in keeping flora harmony in your GI tract. Especially during this time of year, when a build up of unhealthy flora is higher than usual, supplementing with Probiotics/Microflora is a good idea.

Vitamin C -
Most people are familiar with the connection between vitamin C and preventing colds and flus. The question is the form of vitamin C. For some, taking the wrong form, if allergic or sensitive, may do more harm then good. Ester-C is the form we prefer because is one of the least allergenic, least acidic, and is easy on the GI tract. Take as directed by your licensed health professional.
