ASK BONNIE for September 2000
Question #1:
I am interested in your opinion of any sort of a "popcorn diet."
Answer #1:
A "popcorn diet" can be very dangerous. Excess corn blocks B-vitamin absorption.
Eating corn occasionally may be fine, if people are not corn allergic (corn is a common
allergen). Many people also have corn sensitivities (inability to digest corn), including
my daughter. She can eat one cup of air-popped popcorn and gain 5-7 pounds within hours
from fluid retention. Corn products in moderation, if counted as a high glycemic
carbohydrate choice is fine for people who do not overdo it and are not sensitive to it.
Question #2:
Is it true that eating sugar makes you crave more sugar? And it stays in your body 24 hours?
Answer #2:
The more sugar a person eats, the more they typically crave. It doesn't stay in your body 24 hours, however. It usually takes 2 weeks of no sugar in any form except fruit (not fruit juice) to minimize the cravings. At the same time, it is important to eat more protein, and to take more Zinc, B-vitamins, and Magnesium for blood sugar balance. If these nutrients are not enough to stop the cravings, we can add Chromium (Chromate, Picolinate, or Nicotinate) and Lipoic Acid.
