ASK BONNIE for September 2003

Question #1:

There are so many new products on the market claiming low carbs, and low "net carbs." What's the nutritional "pro's" and "con's" of these low carb and/or sugar free chocolates?

Answer #1:

Most contain harmful sugar substitutes such as Nutrasweet or Splenda, or contain hydrolyzed whey/soy protein (common food reactors). There are very few pure items (those that use cocoa butter or cocoa alone). The least problematic I have found is Doctor's Carb Rite Diet Sugar-Free Bar (dark chocolate with almonds), which contains only 4 grams of carbohydrate per square. They are made by Universal Nutrition.

Question #2:

Bonnie, being a client, I wanted to make you aware of this kind of thing so you could pass along to your clientele. I found out after the fact that my allergist had been including fast-acting steroids in my inoculations all these years. I had never been informed of this, and besides the obvious side effects that come with taking steroids, there is also the possibility of substances like phenol being included. I understand that some allergists do this as a matter of course and that patients are not always informed.

Answer #2:

I have never heard of this! I will now recommend that all of my patients inquire about this. For some, it is possible that relief felt from allergy inoculations could be from the steroids and not the allergens themselves.

Question #3:

What do you know about atopic dermatitis?

Answer #3:

Atopic dermatitis has an underlying cause(s). It is usually related to excess systemic acid imbalance; toxicity of specific acids (most particularly salicylic acids), food sensitivities (not necessarily allergies, but this is also possible), and/or liver toxicity (which can be easily be determined through a blood test). Many medications can also cause the problem. I have been successful with dozens of clients because I focus on removing the cause(s), instead of merely treating the symptoms.

Have a happy, healthy day.
