ASK BONNIE for September 1999

Question:

What are Salicylates (items derived from Salicylic Acid)? And what will result from my eliminating these from my diet for 6 weeks? I understand that my body will possibly become less acidic, but how else will it benefit?

Answer:

Salicylates are medications, chemical substances and foods containing salicylic acid. Major sources are aspirin-containing medications, food dyes, chemical preservatives, etc. A salicylate sensitivity is one of the most misdiagnosed health problems because it can affect your body physically, mentally, and emotionally.

Salicylate sensitivity can cause many symptoms including chronic or intermittent diarrhea, nausea, stomach pain, headaches, central nervous system depression (leading to neurological symptoms including clinical depression, attention deficit disorder, irritability, and muscle & chest pains), hives/rashes, ringing in the ears, chronic sweating and a low platelet count.

Major chemical/medication sources Major food sources
Aspirin Tomato/Tomato Juice
Excedrin Grapes (wine)
Yellow Dyes #5&6 Orange/Orange Juice
Red Dye #40 Tart apples/Apple Juice
Nitrates/Nitrites Black/White/Red Pepper
BHA/BHT
Any coal tar derived dye
(such ascaramel color)

This is a difficult substance to test for toxicity unless you know that you are aspirin sensitive. If you now have any of the above mentioned symptoms, you should see a major improvement in all of them within 6 weeks if your problem truly is related to a salicylate sensitivity or toxicity.

Have a happy, healthy day - Bonnie
