2 Sleep Nutrient Shockers

From eNewsletter 3/15/2023

DID YOU KNOW that taking vitamin D supplements may prevent dementia by 40%? According to a study from Alzheimer's & Dementia: Diagnosis, Assessment & Disease Monitoring, researchers followed 12,500 people who were dementia-free at age 71. Over 10 years, the team found that taking vitamin D supplements was associated with living dementia-free for longer, and there were 40% fewer dementia diagnoses in those who took supplements. Just as exciting, a new study from Nutrients confirmed a lower prevalence of cognitive impairment in those who took B-vitamins, Vitamin D, and CoQ10 daily in older individuals. For the elderly who have already suffered from cognitive impairment, Vitamin D supplementation was beneficial for their brains.

2 Sleep Nutrient Findings

Steve: We place a strong emphasis on sleep for overall wellbeing. As we are always looking for sound, safe strategies to optimize sleep, sometimes research comes along that surprises us. A first-of-its kind study from Nutrients found that those with the most optimal pyridoxal-5-phosphate (P-5-P) blood levels had the most normal sleep quality and duration. P-5-P is the activated form of vitamin B6. Unsurprisingly, subjects with suboptimal P-5-P levels struggled with sleep quality, duration, and daytime sleepiness. P-5-P deficiency is very common and has previously been associated with numerous maladies including depression and gastrointestinal disorders. Our Pure Genomics profile can discern how well you absorb vitamin B6 from food and certain supplemental sources. Another first-of-its-kind double-blinded placebo controlled study from Nutrients has found that that vitamin E offers potential as an alternative treatment for chronic insomnia disorder in postmenopausal women, thereby reducing sedative drug use. After one month of intervention, sleep quality and improvement were significantly better in the vitamin E group (400IU mixed tocopherol) compared with the placebo group. In addition, there was a significant reduction in the percentage of patients using sedative drugs in the vitamin E group. Our Pure Genomics profile can discern how well you absorb vitamin E from food and certain supplemental sources. We do not recommend self-supplementing with these nutrients. Please speak with a knowledgable health professional first.
