Flu Shot a Dud | New Pain Management

From eNewsletter 12/27/2021

DID YOU KNOW that this year's flu shot is a mismatch? According to a study from Medrxiv, in which scientists examined this year’s vaccine and its ability to stop 2021’s dominant flu strains, found the shot is unable to beat a mutation in the flu which will likely be the main variety infecting people this winter. This should not come as a surprise because over the last decade or more, world health officials have guessed wrong much of the time with regard to choosing dominant flu strains.

New Perspectives for Addressing Pain

Whether a result of the crushing opioid epidemic or simply the utter failure of most current pain remediation protocols (one quarter of the US population has arthritis), scientists and clinicians are starting to see pain management in a whole different light. Even the New York Times recently published an extensive piece on complementary forms of pain management. Use Your Breathing One aspect of pain management that has been woefully underused is deep breathing. We see positive results when clients focus on "owning" their pain through deep breathing exercises that expel negative pain associations. This has to do with helping your brain overcome pain anxiety. Research is now catching up. A team of scientists have found a neural network in the brain that coordinates breathing rhythm with feelings of pain and fear. Their findings in Neuron confirm the powerful analgesic properties of deep breathing, as well as addresses the need for patients with chronic pain to focus on fixing "disrupted breathing." Breaking the Pain Cascade A recent study from Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences acknowledged the benefits of specialized pro-resolving mediators (SPMs) for safely breaking the pain cascade so the body's nervous system can calm down. SPMs, found in fish oil, but need to be taken in much higher amounts than daily fish oil supplements allow, are available in therapeutic nutraceuticals prescribed by licensed health professionals. CBD or Cannabis The positive research continues to mount for cannabidiol, either delivered via non-drug CBD or cannabis therapeutics. According to a new study in Experimental and Clinical Psychopharmacology, the benefits are brain related, where CBD directly modifies pain threshold, tolerance, or intensity. Where to Begin One thing you can easily do is reconnect with your breath. See the image at the beginning of our newsletter for simple steps to reconnect with your diaphragm. Therapeutic breathing can also be performed working under the auspices of a knowledgable health professional. Your breathing has impressive analgesic properties. So use it, it's free!

The day started off with bad news as it was announced shortly before tip-off that future No.1 Draft pick Cade Cunningham would not play in Saturday's game against the Baylor Bears.Oklahoma State will be without the services of Cade Cunningham and Rondel Walker for today's game against No. 2 Baylor. With two of their stars out, it was as if this game seemed over before it ever started. They would start the game with just eight scholarship players. This made it a necessity for Issac Likekele Darell Jones Jersey, Avery Anderson, and Bryce Williams all to play close to complete games. Anderson and Williams played 36 minutes each and Likekele played 34 minutes. Inevitably, they ran out of gas…
