What Nutrients Are Americans Lacking?

From eNewsletter 9/1/2021

DID YOU KNOW that older patients with knee osteoarthritis who underwent lengthy diet and exercise interventions reported less pain and maintained weight loss years after the program ended? According to a new study published in Arthritis Care & Research, the benefits still persisted after 3.5 years after the trial ended. There was no contact with the subjects for that entire time. There was some regression, there was some weight regain, but the important part of the study is that, even after 3.5 years, and even with some weight regain, there were clinically important effects that lasted.

What Nutrients Are Americans Lacking?

Steve and Bonnie: I'm sure you're not surprised to learn that the majority of Americans are lacking in myriad nutrients. For those like you that aren't lacking, look at the following benefits! For loved ones, friends, and coworkers, please share this with them. In a sweeping new study from The Journal of Nutrition, researchers found that higher intakes of vitamin E, magnesium, iron, dietary fiber, and potassium were associated with lower all-cause mortality. High intake of vitamin A was associated with lower mortality from cardiovascular disease and cancer, and optimal intake of calcium was associated with a lower rate cancer mortality. Higher intakes of essential amino acids from protein and EPA and DHA from fatty fish and fish oil were associated with lower all-cause and CVD mortality. The researchers call this nutrient adequacy. We call this nutrient optimization!
