DID YOU KNOW that lutein and zeaxanthin are more than just for eye health?

The carotenoids are usually recommended together as a supplement for those with a history of age-related macular degeneration (AMD). But there's more to them than just AMD.

As reported in Frontiers in Nutrition, there were improvements in several ophthalmic examinations for dry eyes and visual health after six months of lutein and zeaxanthin supplementation for regular users of electronic screens compared to the placebo.

Higher intake of lutein and zeaxanthin was associated with a lower incidence of severe headaches or migraines in US adults, according to a study from Frontiers in Nutrition.

Finally, a study from Journal of the American Nutrition Association found lower risk of pancreatic cancer in those with higher amounts of daily lutein and zeaxanthin.

DID YOU KNOW that the FDA is finally recognizing the value of vagus nerve stimulation for the amelioration of autoimmune disease symptoms?

Since the pandemic, I (Steve) have been lauding the value of vagus nerve stimulation because it innervates so many organs, and because of infection, stress, and bad diet and lifestyle, it is often sluggish.

While the old method was to surgically implant a device, there are now methods that can be placed non-invasively on the ear or the neck to stimulate the vagus nerve. Acupuncture or acupressure can also accomplish this.

Autoimmune diseases suppress the immune system. A sluggish vagus nerve is part of the problem. Now, the FDA is poised to approve numerous vagus nerve devices for people with arthritis and other autoimmune diseases, including Crohn's, multiple sclerosis, long-COVID, among others.

DID YOU KNOW that juicing can adversely affect multiple microbiomes?

We always prefer that you eat fruit and vegetables whole instead of juicing them. The reason is that once you break the cell walls, you lose the fiber. Moreover, the act of chewing mobilizes the gastrointestinal tract (GI tract) for digestion. Finally, we have enzymes in our mouth that start the digestive process before even reaching the GI tract. All of this is bypassed if we juice our fruit and vegetables.

As reported in Nutrients, those who performed just a short-term juicing detox juice intervention exhibited changes in saliva and cheek microbiota, particularly in the relative abundances of pro-inflammatory bacterial families. Bacterial taxa associated with gut permeability, inflammation, and cognitive decline increased in relative abundance. The authors purport this is due to the high sugar and low fiber intake of the juice-related products.

This reaffirms our position that eating the real thing is always preferred!
