DID YOU KNOW that vitamin D deficiency is an issue even in low-latitude countries where is there is abundant sunlight?

According to a study from Nutrition Reviews, the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency was unexpectedly elevated in South American populations. The prevalence of deficiency was 34.76%, which shocked the study authors.

The reasons are two-fold:

  • Many living in abundant sun countries still do not spend enough time in the sun. We see the same issue in those living in the sun-loving states of Florida, Arizona, and California.

  • Those spending enough time in the sun do not process vitamin D optimally because of genetic predisposition.

Let this be a reminder to you that no matter where you live, you need supplemental vitamin D3. Now that there are less sunlight hours, increase your supplemental vitamin D3 to your usual fall/winter dosage.

Superfoods With Side Effects

Steve: Here are the top 5 superfoods in which I find my clients most commonly suffer from side effects.

Kombucha

Yeast overgrowth, metabolic acidosis, digestive distress, and acid reflux

Chia Seeds

Digestive distress from high lectin content and salicylate intolerance

Apple Cider Vinegar

Yeast overgrowth, metabolic acidosis, digestive distress, esophageal burning, acid reflux, and tooth enamel erosion

Turmeric

Salicylate intolerance and acid reflux

Greens Powders

Greens powder supplements contain myriad grasses, mosses, fungus, vegetables, fruits, and more. I call them the "throw everything but the kitchen sink" supplements. Given that these supplements contain so many substances, it is almost a given that you will react to one or more of them.

DID YOU KNOW that supplementation of coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10), a substance synthesized in all cells of the body which is necessary for synthesis of ATP (energy to all cells), can be beneficial for many, even those with severe medical issues?

According to a study in Food and Function, CoQ10 supplementation showed a beneficial effect on heart function in heart failure patients, and reducing mortality and hospitalizations. Energy starvation of the heart due to CoQ10 deficiency causes stiffening of the heart walls in the left ventricle and results in impaired filling of the heart, or diastolic dysfunction. Fatigue or lack of energy is a common symptom of diastolic dysfunction.

A study from The Lancet's eClinicalMedicine purports that those with multiple system atrophy, a rare genetic disease, have significantly less atrophy when taking a CoQ10 supplement compared to placebo.

Note: Statin-induced CoQ10 deficiency is the probable cause of the most commonly reported side effects of statins: muscle pain, exercise intolerance, and fatigue.

Optimize Joint Support

Steve: If you've seen me for a chronic pain or arthritis, you've probably heard my spiel about protecting your synovial fluid.

Synovial fluid is the gel like substance between your bones that allow fluid movement. When synovial fluid hardens like cement, you will not move fluidly and arthritic pain often follows. A new study from Biointerphases just elucidated this.

The most important thing you can do to keep your synovial fluid gel-like is to limit sedentary behavior. The longer you sit, the more hardened your synovial fluid becomes. That is why when you sit for long periods and get up you feel so creaky. Sedentary behavior, hour after hour, day after day, and year after year leads to chronic pain and arthritis.

Hence, my rule of thumb is to never sit longer the 30-60 minutes. Even if you only get up for a few seconds and then sit down, it is beneficial for staving off arthritic pain.

What if you already have arthritis and pain?

There are many options that should be individualized. However, the results of a new Frontiers in Nutrition study showed that levels of glutathione in the synovial fluid were lower in patients with severe arthritis than mild arthritis. Moreover, low vitamin D levels were significantly associated with the high levels of inflammatory oxidants.

Subjects with low levels of glutathione and vitamin D were given hyaluronic acid injections with vitamin D, which significantly reduced the oxidative stress status in synovial fluid, attenuated knee pain, and improved knee function.

Hyaluronic acid is an important component of synovial fluid and other connective tissue. The new study from Biointerphases purported that those with arthritis have decreased levels of hyaluronic acid.

DID YOU KNOW that vitamin E has been exhibiting wonderful results recently?

For both men and women, vitamin E had a preventive effect on genital high-risk HPV infection, according to a study from Nutrients.

Long known for protecting the liver, another Nutrients study purports vitamin E supplementation reduced serum ALT and AST levels (liver enzymes) in subjects with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.

Finally, a third study from Nutrients suggested vitamin E had a protective effect on serum C-reactive protein concentrations, cervical cancer, esophageal cancer, cervical intraepithelial neoplasia, pancreatic cancer, and colorectal cancer.

NOTE: when supplementing with vitamin E for therapeutic purposes (separate from a multivitamin), make sure you use a mixed tocopherol. Great dietary sources of vitamin E are nuts, seeds, and avocado.

Warning: Counterfeit, Adulterated Supplements Online

On the internet, especially at Amazon, there is an epidemic of counterfeit, adulterated, and purposely mislabeled dietary supplements. In September 2023, a man was arrested for selling counterfeit Pure Encapsulations products. A study from JAMA Network Open found that half of immune products analyzed from Amazon had labels that did not match the contents.

Centenarian Secrets Revealed

Steve: The results of a study from GeroScience comparing the blood biomarkers of centenarians and non-centenarians revealed fascinating findings.

This is the largest study ever performed on this dataset. Moreover, each subject was followed for 35 years. Twelve blood-based biomarkers related to inflammation, metabolism, liver and kidney function, as well as potential malnutrition and anemia, were included. All of these have been associated with aging or mortality.

Biomarkers

The 12 biomarkers were: uric acid, total cholesterol, hemoglobin A1C (HbA1C), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), albumin, gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT), alkaline phosphatase (AP), lactate dehydrogenase (LD), creatinine, iron, and total iron-binding capacity (TIBC).

Summary of the Results

  • All but two (ALT and albumin) of the 12 biomarkers showed a connection to the likelihood of turning 100. This was even after accounting for age, sex and disease burden.

  • Centenarians tended to have lower levels of HbA1C, creatinine and uric acid from their sixties onwards. In addition, centenarians seldom displayed extremely high or low values. NOTE: while rare these days, we still screen for uric acid in our custom blood work panel.

Bombshell Finding

The lowest out of five groups for levels of total cholesterol and iron had a lower chance of reaching 100 years as compared to those with higher levels.

Low iron and early mortality should come as no surprise. The bombshell is that those with the lowest cholesterol were least likely to become centenarians compared with those with higher levels, even those at the highest levels of cholesterol.

This should give pause to anyone on statins, especially those 75 or older, that are keeping their cholesterol exceedingly low.
